Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy

Alt-country leaning with rock moments. Great, vivid lyrics. Soulful instrumentation and melody. Yep, right up my alley.

I'm feeling that way about the Andrew Bird album as well. I liked it at first but got real tired of it real quick. Then I went back to it and now its a top 5'er of the year candidate. Its just real solid.

#4 for me right now.

and regarding that kings of leon...i HATED their first one, but i really like the new one. maybe i have to go back and listen to the first one again. they can't be that different, can they?

Sure, no problem. I'll do it later when I get home.

OK, let's say you were asked to choose one album as your No. 1 of the year. Just one. Right now. Which would you pick?

If this is one of those "someone puts a gun to your head and says you get one album released this year to listen to forever," I'd probably pick . . .

Aimee Mann: The Forgotten Arm Solid as hell, not a single skipper on it, great lyrics, great musicianship. All around great album and one of my most-listened to of the year.

And also, is your No. 1 indicative of your overall music taste or something that really came out of left field?

Not indicative of my music taste in general, but also not out of left field. My top 10 will have jazz and metal in it as well.

I've never liked the Silver Jews but I've heard the new one sucks, even from fans.

I'm a fan. I listened to it once, and it doesn't suck. The first few tracks are really awkward, but they're still cool. It's not another American Water, and that's going to disappoint some people.

I dunno, Y&YM seems to me to be a little too all over the palce--like they tried to accomplish too much on their debut. That's probably why I tend to only listen to the highs and skip the rest.

Aha just seems like a more concise statement to me.

I really don't have a number one for this year yet, but if I had to decide...

I'm only a couple listens in on Apologies to the Queen Mary, but it definitely has album of the year potential.

Also, probably a number two or three contender: Edan - Beauty and the Beat. Best hip hop release of the year, imo.

Andrew Bird - Mysterious Production of Eggs

It's been my favorite since I bought it right around when it was released, and I still listen to it a few times a week.

Maybe I should give this one another chance. I really tried.
I preferred Y&YM by a long shot.

Aha is an album I can I can listen to all the way through without skipping.

agreed. this is one album that i passed up initially, but then my wife turned me on to it again a few months later.

I vote for this one as well, great from start to finish.

As of today, I'd answer John Vanderslice---Pixel Revolt. It's the one I keep going back to the most.

Low's album is really close, though.
