Man, William Bennett is a prick.

For those that don't know Whitehouse, they produce virtually intolerable "power electronics"

They didn't play! The arrogance is astounding. Dig this:

After Whitehouse's show at the Middle East is cancelled due to poor advance ticket sales, the Boston DIYers act fast to move it to a new venue with a week's notice. So there we are, a room full of people on a Monday night. Some people drove up from Providence to see this show, some out from western Mass (two hours away), most of us have to work in the morning. Lots of folks have been looking forward to this show for a long time. Three opening acts play, and then Philip Best plays 20 minutes of a halfhearted solo. Fine, not great... but then that's it. The room looks around confused, and there's Bennett at the bar, talking... and no, he's not going to play. He doesn't like the sound man, or something. He's just not into it tonight. Lights come up, everyone is asking the same question, and we filter out.

At $10 a ticket, a room full of people there only to see his band, and he thinks it's okay to just decide to not play. He didn't decide at soundcheck; no, he decided right before he was supposed to go on. The arrogance is unbelievable. People start to approach him and Best, asking what's going on... they blow us off, turn thier heads away. The arrogance is shocking. Who acts like that??

I am selling all of my Whitehouse CDs to Twisted Village tomorrow. Unreal.

That's pretty ostentatious. But I have no idea who they are.

I thought Bennett left Whitehouse years ago?

Whitehouse formed in 1980 on the fringe of the industrial music scene. Created by William Bennett, they pioneered a branch of experimental noise known as "power electronics," a genre explored by Japanese artists such as Merzbow. Influenced by contemporaries such as Throbbing Gristle and composers such as Alvin Lucier, Whitehouse developed a unique sound mixing high and low frequencies with aggressive bursts of electronics and vocals. With their label Come Organisation, they released what they termed "the most extreme music ever made." Often subject to censorship by stores and distributors due to subject matter and graphic record designs, they never bowed to commercial pressures and remained in control of their music and label. Whitehouse has recorded with Steve Albini since 1989.

Ironically, their Allmusic entry is written by my college roommate

Anyone who would pay $10 to see that probably got what they deserved.

100% Unlistenable. They do have good song titles, though, if you think Anal Cunt is funny:

"I'm Coming Up Your Ass"
"My Cock's On Fire" (Long Version)
"Shitfun"
"Lightning Struck My Dick"

I'd be willing to bet that they try to achieve the "Brown Note" at every show.

A former friend of mine once popped a Whitehouse cd in during a road trip. I removed the cd after 2 minutes, snapped it in half, threw the contents out the window, reached into my wallet in one fluid motion and dropped a twenty in his lap.

Actually, I listen to noise/power electronics, and there are bands in the genre that I enjoy, and ones that I don't. KK Null came around here once, and he was awesome live. Russell Haswell is pretty enjoyable live, too.

And then there's Pan Sonic. Fuckin' aye.

Never got into Whitehouse, despite their seminalism...seminality...whatever...

From everything I've ever heard about Whitehouse (haven't actually heard them), this seems like the sort of thing they're known for.

Assuming this person were not related to me, I would have taken one jagged half of the broken cd and plunged it into his windpipe.

Ha, some of my friends were the "DIYers" referred to above.

Here's a link to a thread where the primary promoter lays it out:
http://board.crewcial.org/?func=thread&id=84177&r=28

And here's a lengthier thread that's more show response, etc. that makes for interesting reading...well, maybe if you keep up with the Boston noise scene and whatnot:
http://board.honeypump.net/t.php?id=22470&r=83

This had bad news written all over it from the get-go (from my comfy vantage point), but I gotta hand it to the guys for taking the bad with the good.

love this quote:

I had a good time, every set was interesting. I suppose all the rockstar bullshit is to be expected in a genre full of megalomaniacs... But I feel bad for long time WHITEHOUSE fans who didn't get quite what they were expecting.

I liked the quote about the soundman not 'getting' their music. Dude, you make noise.
