Many good records released again in this year, and again this one's gonna be a toughie. At least I know which way Loogar will be voting.

This time I tried to put aside some of my favorites and just pick what I thought the nine most competitive records would be. All are classics, and all should get heavy consideration. If I had to make a prediction, I would say it's definitely gonna be between Exile and Ziggy.

Some omissions:

Genesis - Foxtrot
Can - Ege Bamyasi (Spoon/Mute)
Modern Lovers - S/T
T. Rex- The Slider
Yes - Close to the Edge
Faust - So Far
Bob Marley/Wailers - Catch a Fire
Peter Tosh - Legalize It
Fela Kuti - Roforofo Fight
Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything?
Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill

I myself am voting other. My favorite record of the year is Close to the Edge.

BOWIE

If i had to pick a distant two and three, it would be the Stones, and then Curtis Mayfield

Hell of a year. Came down to Nick Drake and the Stones for me. I voted Stones because Pink Moon is a mood album for me. I play the Stones much more often.

forgot about that one. Now that's a mood record for me. As in: I have to be in the mood to listen to a 43 minute long song

I gotta go with Exile.
It may very well be the moment Rock Music, in its purest form, achieved perfection.

I voted other for Caetano Veloso "Transa" which is my favorite record of all time. This is the single best, deepest year in the history of music imo. 3 of my top 4 of all time were first released in 1972:

Transa, Superfly, & Ziggy.

Half of my top ten of all time were released that year:

the above 3 plus

Gram Parsons "GP" &
Neil Young "Harvest"

Other Notables not listed:

Archie Shepp "Attica Blues"
Archie Shepp "The Cry of Our People"
Lo Borges S/T
The Harder They Come
Al Green "I'm Still in Love With You"
Gilberto Gil "Expresso 2222"
Bill Withers "Still Bill"
Cymande S/T
Lyn Collins "Think"
Marvin Gaye "Let's Get It On"
Van Morrison "St. Domenic's Preview"
Townes Van Zandt "High Low & In Between"
Marcos Valle "Vento Sul"
Gene Clark "Roadmaster"
Townes Van Zandt "The LAte Great Townes Van Zandt"
Jorge Ben "Ben"
Milton Nascimento e Lo Borges "Clube Da Esquina"
Doris Monteiro "Doris" (1972)
Os Novos Baianos "Acabou Chorare"
Aretha Franklin "Amazing Grace"
Alice Clark S/T
James Brown "There It Is"
James Brown "Get on the Good Foot"
Gil-Scott Heron "Free Will"

I'm going to go with albums I actually listen to, but I would also add in Nick Drake because while I do like it, I don't listen to it that much. The rest . . . eh.

Yeah, for me it was a tossup between Slider and Something/Anything.

Personally, save for a few songs I always felt Exile was a bit too overrated. While I like it, I don't think it's all that.

I agree. Its clearly most people's favorite Stones album but I'd rank it no higher than 4th best and possibly as low as 6th best. I thought about starting a thread asking for personal ranking of stones albums...but me too lazy.

While agree that the mythology surrounding this album can get heady, there's not a single throw away track. It also reveals itself better if listened to how it was released: as 4 sides, each exploring a different texture of the Americana songbook. (Didn't I say it gets heady)
Side 4 is my favorite, cos the beautiful decay and the soulfullness of songs like Let it Loose and Shine a Light are almost too good to be true.
Also, like all "favorites" it has emotional heft and baggage for me personally, as it was basically the soundtrack to 2-3 of the best worst years of my life.

I'm also not a huge fan of Exile. My faves have always been Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers.
