This is my little diamond in the rough that I have found so far out of all the year end lists that I have read.

Sample it for yourself.

http://www.emusic.com/album/10863/10863603.html

It is excellent.

Yup. Played our first show ever opening for them and the Beatings. They were known as the Datsons at the time.

No, the Datsons.

I haven't heard the new album, but I was entirely unimpressed with the previous one.

To avoid further mistaken ID with the Datsuns, they even changed their name to the Datson 4. But I guess that didn't work so hot either.

Anyhow, good revivalist band, but I've never thought they were anything too special. Great dance/houseband...all the mods seeemed to dig them around 00/01 or so. They had their own big annual party in Montreal with a variety of DJs, bands, etc.

Memory might be failing me here, but I believe Datson was the orginal spelling of the car manufacturer that went on to become Nissan.

That would've been a pretty intriguing bill. Crappy melodic indie band, revivalist mod band from Montreal...and Franti. I mean it could've worked in 1989...

heard something from them late last year & they were on my radar for emusic purchase, then slipped somewhere along the way. i heard they riyl to 60s psycha-pop, stone roses, echo&bunny, doves and coldplay.

they lost out to dalek & syd matters for my final (booster) emusic downloads, but then that didn't happen either.

Where's IdiotJed? He's a HUUUUGE fan of these guys. Nice pop. Definitely a hard working band who have no problem sleeping on floors and living out of a van.

I like 'em.

I really dig their most recent album. The one before that sucked IMO.

I know of them. I want to say they played an IPO on the same bill as Spade Kitty night one year

I remember them playing at the Milky Way version of the Pill (KPH, is this right?) and not being too impressed.

Whoa. Where was the show?

Once again---like the old washed up rock musician that I am---I must state: "Yeah, I knew them when, back in Montreal etc. etc. They are old friends of my old band, we used to play shows together, etc. etc." blah blah blah.

Actually, the new record was recorded by the guitarist from my old band.

Although they were fun live I can't say I was that into their old mod stuff.
The new album on the other hand fucking rocks. Bias aside I bacame quite obsessed with it for quite some time and it ended up making my top 10 list of the year (which of course I lazily neglected to post here).

Such solid and subtle and catchy songwriting and lovely mody/shoegazey melodies. ...

#1 I don't know about their last album being crappy or about them being boring live a couple years ago, but the new disc is excellent.

Hum. Was that post for me? If it was you misunderstood me. (???)

#1 They are great live.

#2 The only thing I wasn't as into in the past was the fact that their music was pretty straight-up mod... great but not the most original.

#3 The new album fucking rocks. It was maybe even in my top 5.

My favorite local band. "War Of The Wakening Phantoms" was my favorite '05 power pop release (after the posies) #5 on my year end list. I think i've prolly seen them 6 ... 7 times live last year. They put on a killer show.

It's probably what Teenage Fanclub should sound like today if they weren't churning out same-y albums year after year.

And I agree ... I tought the Datsons 4 were shiite.

Rainbow Quartz is a great label... I recommend checking out mp3's from The Contrast, The Frontier Index, The High Dials, The Lackloves, Myracle Brah, Rockfour (one of my personal favorites), The Rhinos, The Singles.. not to mention bands you may already be familiar with like the Shazam, Waxwings, Outrageous Cherry, and the Lilys.

Lots of great jangly, Beatlesque, and psychedelic stuff.

Rainbow Quartz is top notch.

Also...Cotton Mather on their roster! And, for the record, I love Lilys.

I did make a purchase from Rainbow Quartz based on an mp3 from their site. The song was fantastic but, unfortunately, the rest of the album doesn't compare (mostly I have problems with the lyrics -- the band is from Spain and sing in English). Anyway, here is a mp3 link to the Gallygows song Tone Generator:

http://www.rainbowquartz.com/mp3/rqtz055_2.mp3

Just wish I liked the rest of the cd as much as I like this song!
