If your urine is clear, you're properly hydrated.

If it's yellow, you lose.

The most likely outcome of training for and running a marathon is long-term joint damage.

on the topic of hyrdation. it's good to drink a big glass of water before each meal. By doing so, you are less likely to overeat.

Seriously, 'rampant dehydration' in Western Countries is a myth. Your kidneys are quite efficient at concentrating the urine to minimise water loss. Most of that extra water you're drinking is eliminated from your body fast. Its not gonna hurt to drink alot of water (lower risk of kidney stones etc.) , I do it myself, but the idea that theres that many dehydrated people is certainly a myth.

well the first part is definitely true. if you are voiding dilute urine, then your hydration status is adequate. if your urine is dark then it may or may not be

this all assumes no intrinsic kidney disease

well i did add the caveat. and yes i know that one can have central DI, but nephrogenic DI certainly falls under the category "intrinsic kidney disease"

:P

That's why I haven't run anywhere since high school. It's not natural!

Very much true. Water and food go to the same place. The more water you drink, the less hungry you'll feel. Common sense you would think, but it took a concentrated effort to lose weight to realize it. Drink water when you're not thirsty, you won't be hungry later.

... Ok. But does this fall under the category "myth":

if all your stools are sinkers, you're not properly nourished, but if they're all or mostly floaters, you have a balanced diet?

It never occured to me about floaters.. I figured it was fiber in my diet or something. Sinkers could be fruit and vegtables. I have a one year old and fruit and veggies definitely sink/stink big time.

I think the only thing I can attest to truthfully is drinking too much and having gastric pains the next day. Belly ache/runs on top of trying to tame a hangover is not good.

Just so you know.

If one is truly dehydrated you need to replace lost minerals and electrolytes, not just plain water to increase your body's circulating fluid volume.

Most false. However, if your urine is RED OR BLACK though this is a BAD sign. Seek medical attention immediately.

Unless you're pregnant. Then most likely its often yellow no matter how much friggin water you drink and did you know that sometimes the sex of the baby can be determined by what shade of yellow your pee is?

Or at least that part's an old wives tale. But the first part is true.
