BTW, and not for nothing, but that 100 point Wilt the Stilt game NEVER HAPPENED.

Prove it.

Wasn't there a radio broadcast? Conspiracy theories are great and all, but did the radio guy just sit there and pretend he was scoring that much?

Ever heard the tape? I have. Dunno, I've heard a lot of radio tape.....Again, prove it.

Umm.... and why would it be a fabrication?

Because the game was played in Hershey PA and reeks of an exibition not a legit NBA game. Because the evidence is not substantiated by anything other than some hazy accounts.....

As though the Milwaukee Bucks have never played an home game in Green Bay, Wisc.

As though the Arizona Cardinals of Mexico didn't open their season, as the home team, in Mexico City.

As though the Yankees and Devil Rays never played in Tokyo.

Teams go outside home market all the time, exhibition and regular season. It's not hard to imagine the Philly Warriors playing a game in Hershey - perchance the authentic home-court was occupied (I doubt that the NBA of the 50s/60s had exclusive rights/right of first refusal deals with arenae, as it does now, for its teams) - which also is hardly out of market.

Pip, pip.

Actually, I don't think there is a radio broadcast. I know there's no TV evidence, and I thought basically the conspiracy was that it was played in Hershey, and that there are only newspaper accounts?

That's impressive, but also shows how little of a team game the NBA is, which is the primary reason (of many) that I have very little interest in it.

And when Wilt scored 4-5 games over 70 in 1962-3 that means it was even less of a team game then?

Had I been born yet, I would've hated the NBA then, too.

OK...grant you that. But in college and certain games in the pros when he looked like the best basketball player ever. Injuries cut into his career, no question. Saw him a couple months ago at a Jerry tribute in Berkeley... in the VIP section moving around quite well, though looked like he had problems with lateral movement during The Other One... btw I am not a Deadhead...just had the unexplained impetus to keep seeing them for 30 years.

how can you say that? Have you ever watched tapes of those games? There is no defense. Even if that wasn't the case, Jordan has won more championships. What makes Wilt better? He always talked himself up and rarely delivered the goods.

i'm not a 100% stat man, but look at his stats.
look at the records he holds. his dominance of the leauge was insane and the only athlete that comes close was Babe Ruth.

and no i've never seen him, but my dad (who was a basketball coach for 30+ years did) and he says he's the best. so that's all i need to know.

I think bloor is wrong to not include wilt in the top 8 but I still say 81 today is more impressive than 100 back then. No one played defense back then and Wilt was huge in a game full of smaller players. The score of the game Wilt scored 100 in was something like 160 -147. This year, entire teams have failed to score 81 pts in a game 58 times.

Doesn't mean Wilt wasn't great. I almost think centers should be considered entirely separately from other positions, kind of like pitchers and hitters. How do you really compare Jordan and Wilt or Kobe and Shaq. Its hard to do.

Kobe’s Teammates Lauded For Ability To Stay Out Of The Way

Los Angeles - Kobe Bryant may have done the unthinkable Sunday night by scoring 81 points, but it would not have been possible without his teammates. Players like Lamar Odom, Chris Mihm, and Smush Parker didn’t fill up the stat sheet, but they contributed to Kobe’s record-breaking night by passing the ball to him and then deftly getting out of his way.

“This is definitely a team accomplishment,” Bryant told reporters after the game. “It’s not easy getting out of the way like my teammates did. At one point I almost tripped over Smush Parker on my way down the court, but he was so quick that he just dove out of the way. He actually landed in the first row of seats. He had blood pouring down his face. Talk about a warrior. I’ll go to battle with that guy any day of the week.”

Bryant also cited Odom, who took only 7 shots in his quest to help Kobe reach his milestone.

“Lamar is a great teammate. I told him at the beginning of this season that he really needed to practice getting out of the way. And he has. I especially liked when he intercepted that pass from Luke [Walton] that was intended for Kwame Brown and sent it right over to me. Luke made a mistake passing that ball to Kwame, and Lamar stepped in and corrected it. But that’s how this team is. We’re constantly picking each other up.”

One play in particular epitomized the getting-out-of-the-way ability of Bryant’s teammates. During the fourth quarter, while the Lakers were staging their comeback, Bryant grabbed a defensive rebound and began dribbling down the court. Each member of the Lakers then simultaneously fell to the floor and curled up in the fetal position to make sure they didn’t interfere with Bryant’s fast break. The result of the play? A two-point slam dunk.

Said Luke Walton: “That’s just teamwork right there. We just wanted to make sure we were not in his path to the basket, and also make sure he didn’t get any stupid ideas to pass it to us. We don’t want the ball. Seriously, everyone here knows we are better off just deferring to Kobe in those situations. In fact, if he starts trying to distribute the ball more often, I’m asking for a trade. I’m here to win a championship, not miss shots.”

In the past, Bryant has been criticized for his failure to get his teammates involved. Many critics say that he will never reach the level of Michael Jordan, simply because he can’t make those around him better.

Coach Phil Jackson, however, has asked Bryant not to change a thing.

“I coached both Kobe and MJ, and I know what each player can do. Who would you rather have shooting the ball, Kobe or somebody named Smush Parker? How about Devean George? Exactly. These guys are very, very good at not shooting the ball, and we want to put them in a position to exploits those talents. That’s why I’m such a great coach. I know how to get the most out of my players, or in this case, the least.”

But Kobe has bigger goals than winning a scoring title or breaking individual records. He wants to bring another championship to LA, and he’s made it clear that he can’t do it without his teammates.

“Obviously my number one goal is to win a championship,” he said. “The reward is so great. I’ll get to say that I brought yet another championship to the fans of LA, and my teammates get to say that they stood aside and watched the whole thing. They’re going to be witnesses to history! Talk about being in an elite club. They ’ll be right up there with Jack Nicholson and Diane Cannon.”

To show his appreciation after Sunday’s game, Bryant bought each of this teammates a brand new Rolex watch. The expensive, top-of-the-line time pieces were engraved with each player’s name and a personal message from Kobe: “Stay out of my way – KB”

Kobe has a certain zenith and pure natural talent that I last saw in a young AI, and before that, MJ in his prime.

however this was a meaningless regular season game against the freakin Raptors who I am disappointed in this season.

The fact is, Kobe is nothing without shaq. Yes he is still an offensive presence. But can this carry on into playoff basketball? Where playing as a team is essential to winning a title? I don't think so. He has always been in Shaq's shadow, because Shaq WAS the main guy who brought the lakers the dynasty. Kobe was the icing on the cake, but not the bread that held it together.

I'm so sick of hearing this. Have you really put thought into saying this or are you just regurgitating it because you've heard it said 1000 times so it must be true.

The bottom line is the lakers as a team were a dynasty. They wouldn't have been a dynasty without shaq, without kobe, without horry, without d fish. Kobe will win at least one more championship, shaq won't.

Exactly, the Lakers of those years had great role players... don't forget Brian Shaw and Rick Fox. Nothing was so crushing to opponents who were collapsing on Shaq and double teaming Kobe as Fisher, Shaw or Horry shooting uncontested threes.

And remember folks... Kobe is 27... his best years are ahead of him. He'll win more than one more championship.
