Isn't this what the Charts function is for? However, I guess you can't really discuss albums there.

Yeah, the Yail Bloor System might be something like:

Diptheria
Lou Gherigs Disease
Whooping Cough
Tachycardia
Legionaires Disease

and who knows what is what?

Question: are we including reissues (ie. Talking Heads albums) on these lists?

We don't count them in year-end lists -- unless you're important enough that you have a separate reissues list...I know 2005 was a pretty good year for reissues: Yello, Slowdive, Hackett, Eurythmics, etc.

That's awful exclusive. You gotta at least make room for live albums.

see, what's the point? missing out on some music so that you don't have to feel rushed to create your end-of-the-year list?

no thanks. to each their own though.

I think what's he saying is not that he's rushed to make a year-end list, but rushed to hear it all in general. There's only so much time in each day that you can devote to music. But I get your point - I think it's just that some people like to listen to their standards all the time and some people like to hear new things all the time. If you'd rather hear stuff by your favorites, then it's hard to find time to shoehorn in a new album that may or may not be worth devoting the time to. Most often, sadly, I'm finding that they're just not, so I'm with Paladisiac here.

I'm going to rate albums based on FT's HOTTNESS INDEX, which establishes an admittedly arbitrary scale using the following attractiveness spectrum of famous females:

10 - Scarlett Johanssen
9 - Catherine Zeta-Jones
8 - Cindy Crawford
7 - Elizabeth Vargas
6 - Marcia Gay Harden
5 - Kyra Sedgwick
4 - Hillary Clinton
3 - Courtney Love
2 - Rachel Dratch
1 - Greta Van Susteren

Based on this rating scale, here's where I rank what I've heard so far in 2006:

1. Destroyer = Cindy Crawford
2. Cat Power = Marcia Gay Harden-and-a-half
3. Robert Pollard = Marcia Gay Harden
4. Neko Case = Marcia Gay Harden
5. Campbell/Lanegan = Hillary Clinton-and-a-half

It's been more than a month, and I've heard quite a few more albums since my last update, so here's the current seeding on FT's Best-o-2K6:

1. Destroyer - "Rubies"
2. The Minus 5 - "The Gun Album"
3. Loose Fur - "Born Again in the USA"
4. Robert Pollard - "From a Compound Eye"
5. Starlight Mints - "drowaton"
6. Arctic Monkeys - "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not"
7. The M's - "Future Women"
8. Eagles of Death Metal - "Death by Sexy"
9. Drive-By Truckers - "A Blessing and a Curse"
10. Josh Rouse - "Subtitulo"
11. Donald Fagen - "Morph The Cat"
12. Centro-Matic - "Fort Recovery"
13. Mates of State - "bring it back"
14. Cat Power - "The Greatest"
15. Rhett Miller - "The Believer"
16. Neko Case - "Fox Confessor Brings The Flood"
17. Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - "Ballad of the Broken Seas"
18. Richard Ashcroft - "Keys to the World"

I would like to add that I definitely like albums 1-11, am still undecided on whether or not I like albums 12-16, and pretty much don't care for 17 and 18.

07 "destroyer's rubies" destroyer
08 "at war with the mystics" the flaming lips
09 "first impressions of earth" the strokes

but with a couple more listens, i'm sure the bottom 3 will be bumped for loose fur, jason collett and josh rouse.

1. The Strokes
2. Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan
3. Arctic Monkeys
4. Neko Case
5. Mogwai

That's all I've really taken the necessary time to listen to so far.

It's too early for me to even have a good top 5, but here's what I have in order of favorite to least:

Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice - Gipsy Freedom
Liars - Drum's Not Dead
Super Numeri - The Welcome Table
Terrestrial Tones - Dead Drunk
Cat Power - The Greatest

I've d/l'ed and listened to Belle & Sebastian, Mogwai, The Strokes, Drive-By Truckers, and Tortoise/BPB, but I don't like any of them (other than B&S) enough to buy. The Life Pursuit is probably a little better than The Greatest.

Destroyer's Rubies
Reveals something new with everything listen. Sometimes it's baffling, other times makes complete sense.

The Flaming Lips - At War...
I think it's tremendous fun.

The Walkmen - A Hundred Miles Off*
Easily their most cohesive and balanced record, but I suspect it will not be received well by folks who are only really fans of the Two Big Singles. Their "Minor Threat" songs give me chills.

B&S - Life Pursuit
Fun pop stuff with a bit of gravitas. But, I don't see this staying high on my list.

* as soon as I find a copy that is not copy-protected I am YSI'ng the shit out of it. Promise!

Louisiana is as good of a single as they have had.
