giddity, i'm looking forward to the new radio 4. review from astralwerks' e-mail blast from their performance at sxsw:

Quote:
After a quick changeover, Brooklyn’s one and only Radio 4 came with a blistering set that included a generous selection of songs from their staggering forthcoming album, “Enemies Like This”. The band have really pulled out all the stops on this one and we can’t wait for you to hear what the boys have cooked up for you. A return to the raw naked power of “Gotham”, these songs are going to finally get Radio 4 the attention they deserve.

let's hope so.

We are nearly 1/4 though the year and I've heard exactly 2 2006 new releases. I like one of them.

1. Tapes N Tapes The Loon
2. Destroyers Rubies
3. Mogwai The Beast
4. J Dilla Donuts
5. Beth Orton Comfort of Strangers

Disappointments: Neko Case (too sweet, too middle of the road, way boring) The rabbit fur coat mess - this year's anthony and the johnsons...

I kept thinking that Beth Orton sounded exactly like a singer I loved, and I couldn't remember who. It was driving me crazy. Yesterday as I drove past the Moss Landing powerplant it hit me, she sounds like Beth Orton. I crack myself up.

The top 10 so far (and dammit I wish I had more to go on)

1. Drive By Truckers - A Blessing And A Curse
2. Belle And Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
3. The Strokes - First Impressions of Earf
4. Minus 5 - The Gun Album

The Bob Pollard aint really grabbing me either.

I've been listening this week to B. Fleischman's The Humbucking Coil

Def one of my favorite of the year so far... re: the recent Eno threads... this sounds like the child of Eno and The Notwist. RIYL: Aphex Twin, Lantana, Loren Connors...

Remember the 100% good vs. 75% great/25% crap thread I started earlier this week? The Minus 5 falls into the 100% good camp. Not a clunker in the bunch. Not sure whether any individual tracks are transcendent enough to be considered "great," but there is not a single bad note on this album. As an added bonus, Colin Meloy sings lead on one track, and it's actually NOT a sea shanty about gymnastic chimney sweeps!!!
