Have you heard his other solo work mark? Bubblegum is my least favorite of his solo work.

I've only listened to Ballad of Broken Seas once but so far its pretty disappointing. I don't really feel like there is a good fit between lanegan and campbell. Its too pretty for lanegan if that makes sense. The rough edges of his voice and the darker moods of his music (both of which are the main attaction of lanegan to me) are mostly all missing. It often sounds like he's given up whisky and cigarettes. I need to listen to this more and at louder volumes but that's my impression so far.

Whiskey for the Holy Ghost is his best. I'd have a hard time picking a second favorite. Bubblegum is my least favorite followed by The Winding Sheet. Everything else is really good.

As is Scraps for Midnight and I'll Take Care of You...if there's one standout it's Whiskey for the Holy Ghost. There's really no solo Lanegan that I don't like but Bubblegum and Winding Sheet pale compared to the others.

It's in the same vein as Slobberbone and the more raucous of the "alt.country" type stuff. It's rough around the edges, but gloriously sloppy...and really quite catchy. I think jagged is also a fan.

Wish I could abide, bro, but that BTS is a mind-numbing wankfest, and nothing really grabs me on the Campbell/Lanegan, outside of a song or two. I find it really boring.

Outside of a song or two, it's just really blah and boring to me. Bubblegum is MUCH better.

ft is right - only a couple of the songs are worthwhile on ballad of the broken seas. lanegan is a lot more interesting than campbell.

FT is right but if he were to name the songs he'd probably be wrong. I think the song he put on his mix is one of (if not THE) the worst songs on the album.

no he's not. A perfect compliment of rough vs elf. Not completely stunning, but a damn fine album.

this is fun.

Count me in as one of the people who prefer Bubblegum over any other Lanegan solo album. It still was far from perfect, but it at least allowed him to loosen up a little. His previous stuff was way too cautious to my ears, as if he was shooting for mellow world-weariness but was still stuck in the concept stage. Bubblegum seemed like his first full, clear-eyed stride into the future. Makes me highly anticipate the follow-up.

You've got a gift with the english language because this sounds really good until I realize that I have no friggin' idea what you're talking about and I still have to disagree because the one thing I do get is that you think Bubblegum is his best and I think its his worst

That's exactly how I passed my Russian Lit class in uni.

Thing is, I agree there are a couple songs on Bubblegum that might rank as Lanegan's worst, but overall I found it a much more engaging album than his earlier ones. And I wouldn't say the earlier stuff was bad or anything, but I did end up selling all those albums.

I'm wondering if this might be one of your rare trade-in screw-ups. Which ones did you own and how long ago did you trade them in? I bought Whisky for the Holy Ghost when it first came out because I used to like Screaming Trees back in the day. It was nothing like 'em and didn't immediately appeal to me so I traded it in. I picked up Field Songs a few years back - loved it and went back and repurchased all the older ones, loved all of 'em but esp. Whisky for the Holy Ghost.

Those rekkids have got that rare ability to really transport you to a dark, dirty and dingy bourbon soaked melancholy like nothing else but maybe Morphine. I love the hell out of all of 'em. Bubblegum, by contrast, rocks more but that's all it is just a good straightforward rock album. I don't mean to diminish that because its good for what it is, but its not otherwordly like the others.

It could be. I bought Whiskey For The Holy Ghost and (I think it was called) Winding Sheet (?) back when they first came out. I liked Screaming Trees too, but I was actually hoping for Lanegan to try something with less rock/grunge guitar all over it - so I was (and still am) hopeful that Lanegan could really sink into that down and dirty (as you so eloquently put it:) bourbon soaked melancholy. But I dunno, it never stuck with me - although around that time there was a British comp called Sharks Patrol These Waters that had a non-album Lanegan track called "Wheels" that completely lived up to my hopes. So, yeh, maybe I should revisit those albums one of these days.

Winding Sheet isn't all that special but all the others are. I'd be surprised if you really thought that they were trade in material if you revist them.
