i'm no expert, but i believe it depends on where you're located. i do know that store owners have a right to detain shoplifters. there' some background here.

It has been my understanding that you can intervene on your own if the suspect is committing a felony, but you can only detain. No searches. You also are pretty well limited to just detaining the suspect, and you liable if shit goes wrong.

But I tried a citizen's arrest on a guy for littering before and got a fat lip.

We used to chase shoplifters down the street, tackle and beat the crap out of them, then drag 'em back to the store until the cops arrived.
