i usually do not go to shows if i don't like at least one band that's playing. i think it's typical of showgoers, but a lot of my friends don't seem to think so. what do the obners say?

I pretty much don't go to shows anymore for a number of reasons.

Been more than a year since I saw The Thermals at King Tut's.

lots of good questions being raised today. i voted #3. although i have gone to some shows that i never knew anything about the band, i'd say i've had a 50% success rate in doing so -- most notably, the old 97s way back when.

I picked number two, normally I have heard at least one or two tracks from a group before I see them. Most of the shows I see, I probably don't own anything by half the performers yet and have never seen them live.

i love king tuts. its tiny. i saw the ordinary boys there and another band called kain, now called raising kain. i think they changed their name so people wouldn't get them confused with keane.

I'm in the third bucket but with more time, money and in a city that attracted better music, I might be closer to #2.

Option 1 if a friend or group of friends wants to go and I don't have anything better going on

Option 2 fits my philosophy provided that I really trust the source of the praise (which I rarely do)

Option 3: is the reality of what I do most.

I am really finicky about shows when I have money. Not to mention that it costs me about $20 in transportation to get to any show I want to go to because I've got to take the train in to Toronto.

So unless I love a band that's playing I won't go. Even if I own an album by them and like it, if I know they have a bunch others, I won't bother. I'm not going to spend the cash unless I'm sure I'll know the material.

If I lived in Toronto, though, and had friends, I could totally see myself just picking up and randomly going to a show at the Horseshoe or the El Mocambo or something on a whim.

I'm pretty much over shows at this point...

Still some bands ill go out and see each time they come around, but for the most part, i have little interest in checking out bands that i like but dont love.

#1 has been happening a lot lately mainly because of the job.

#2 also happens a lot because i'm always open to listening to new bands that a friend will recommend, or checking out a friend's band, or supporting the local scene, etc.

#3 because i'm also a show whore.

so it's case by case for me.

I go to any show by a band if it sounds like its something that I will like or if a bunch of my friends are going, mainly just to have something to do, plus not very many bands come through Boone NC.

How about, "I am so far away from good venues I seldom, if ever, get to a show?"

I don't care who's playing as long as they don't interrupt my conversation with the bartender.

With all the music acessable via internet, seems silly to go to a show without listening to some of the music

If I lived in a larger place with more friends who enjoyed music, I'd pretty much go to anything, for a while at least. As it stands now, I'm option 3.
