-mariza's fado en mim
-patty griffin's 1000 kisses

someone suggested i check them out.
should i really?
think it's my kind of thing or what?
what is my kind of thing?

i have a feeling they're not my usual fare, but i have an open mind.

i'll just wait here hoping for real opinions while this probably turns into a sausagefest of some sort.

Patty Griffin's first two albums, "Living With Ghosts" and "Flaming Red" are two of my favorite albums of the 90's. Havent gotten into the rest of her stuff as much though.

You know, so many times some guy here has typed "I like chicks" and I always mean to edit the quote to read "I like dicks" and never have.

Nonetheless, sorry ayah. I don't know about those albums, but get with the program, people!

From the janis joplin thread:

Prince of Darkness Wrote:
most of the people here don't know who Patty Griffin is, but i'll tell you, I opened up for her in concert, and she's a great performer and a great writer.

You can't really compare the two, one's a folkie and the other's a rocker, and why would you want to compare them anyways, or diss one for the other?

Pointless.

Living with Ghosts is a great place to start with Patty Griffin.

I've never heard a whole Mariza album, but she's a Portuguese Fado singer. She's got a pretty voice and a modern sound for what is a very old, classic style of singing. I like what I've heard -- enough to put her on a list of people I want to pick something up from but not enough to have actually done so despite her being on that list for almost a year. I'm pretty sure I have a song or two lying around on a world music sampler. If I can find one, I'll ysi it over the weekend.

Patty Griffin is an incredibly talented singer songwriter with a husky, smoky voice. Her guitar playing is accomplished without being folk wankerish.

Flaming Red is her electric album, and my least favorite, but still damn good.

1,000 Kisses is live, and great.

Living with Ghosts is awesome.

Does that help?

I owned Flaming Red for about 3 days. I hope the Dark Prince is right and that it's her weakest, because it was just a mediocre, middle-of-the-road snooze. Is she cooler than Lucinda Williams? Not a chance. But if you want another Shawn Colvin in your collection, then she might do the trick.

She's way better than Shawn Colvin, and I prefer her to Lucinda Williams.

I'll YSI Living with Ghosts tonight when I get home and find it.

I like Mariza.. she is probably the most famous contemporary Fado singer. Fado is a Porteguese folk genre- which was really regarded as 'lower class' for a long time but has recently enjoyed a resurgence among younger people.

I think I have some Fado in mp3 form on a computer in my lab, Ill try to find some songs and YSI them
