I am honored, yet feel compelled to urge you to aspire to much more than what little I have accomplished. Hey, I got the green light from SHEFRAC for you and your traveling buddy to catch zzzs at our place when you roll through town on 8/29!

You were right, that kid's big, Bob! He could palm me off the ground.

Looks like everyone had a really good time.

Congrats. I hope things continue to go smoothly... Smoothly enough.... However it goes.

Also, I am glad that field's grass isn't field-turf. I positively loath that, even more than astro-turf. (Either natural, or absolutely fake... No natural-looking fakeness.)

Awesome Bob. Thanks for sharing this. Gives me faith in humanity again.

Too many people are praising me when those kids are really the ones who deserve all the kudos. I didn't do anything but drive the minivan to and from the game.

I think much of the praise, Bob, is from people who appreciate you sharing this with us and making our days a lot more special because of it.
That you're a great dad and all-around awesome person doesn't surprise anyone, but the fact that we got a peak into this muy cool day for you and the family is above and beyond for us.

So thanks. It looks like everyone had a great day and now we have, too.

congrats to you and your family. my mom was a special needs teacher (just retired). she had so many stories of parents that did not give two shits about their child. to hear your story and see how proud you are of him is great. thanks for sharing!

My mom also is a special needs teachers who has been teaching Autistic kids for about 17 years now. Most of the parents are either over portective of their kids or just don't care. Its great for Autistic kids to be able to do things like special olympics and the baseball thing.

Plus, with his bloodline, you could take three years off, or add five years to, his age. Hell, have him playing in the Mexican League next week, and picked up by the Dodgers next year.

Awww, what a great story! I tell ya, there's nothing like having a sense of personal achievement your first time playing a sport on a "real" team. This is what memories are made of.

PS -- Love the photos too!

Hey Bob, just for the sake of discussion: What's your take on the whole thymerasol/autism issue?

Not sure if I've heard anything regarding thymerasol. SHEFRAC is the house pharmacist, so to speak. For the past several years, he's been on Clonidine and Zyprexa. They both pile on the weight, unfortunately, but they help control his outbursts to a manageable level. We didn't want him to have to be on medicine, as we are NOT the people who think pills fix everything. But, of everything we've tried over the years (all with multiple doctor consultations/evaluations), these seem to work the best for him. I only wish he wasn't burdened with the extra lbs. that come as a result of those meds. Lord knows he's already going to have to fend off my fat gene as he gets older.

FYI, thimerasol is the mercury-based preservative used to keep vaccines...well, preserved. There was a lawsuit against the federal government brought by parents of autistic children alleging that the additive caused autism. The case resulted in no cash settlements for the plaintiffs, if I recall, and caused the government to enact federal class-action lawsuit protection for makers of vaccines.

The jury is way out on this deal, there is no hard proof that thimerasol has anything to do with this (not likely), and its nearly impossible to prove (I mean, everyone gets immunized, right?). It just seem kind of nasty though, knowing what we know about the toxicity of mercury.

edit:oh yeah, good to see you have some human genes, bob...i figured you were all reptile ;)

He's 5'3" (already taller than momma) and 183+ lbs. He'll eclipse 200 before he's 12, no doubt. It's the meds, but there's also some muscle beneath the chub. He gets that from my father-in-law. Strong as a MULE.

My son's been on Ambilify/Chlonidine, which has worked out sooo much better than the Risperdol/Chlonidine mixture. We still struggle with the weight issues, but he's a lot more vibrant and outgoing.

My neighbor across the street's son is waiting to get the blood screens back on the thimerisol deal. My son's condition stems from an extremely premature birth, so the mercury deal doesn't appear to be in play.

I repeat how awesome the baseball story is. We got to sneak up on the closing minutes of my son's "Super Saturday" camp, and he was whacking the ball off a tee-ball tee. Aces!

Thanks for the info, Billz...I had no idea your son was on the same meds. We should compare notes further sometime.
