Okay, so I am late to the boat on this one, and there are other threads dedicated to this band, but I couldn't pick which one to post in, so I just wanted to start a new one to state...

I am listening to this for the first time, and it is the best album I have heard so far this year, in what is already a very strong year (IMO).

Hellz yeah!
This freaking rocks.

That is all.

I was disappointed. And Brendan Benson can do no wrong, as far as Im concerned.

So I blame this one on White.

"Steady as She Goes" kicks my ass.

I like the rest of the album, but it'll be a fight to make it on the top 20 at the end of the year, methinks.

Yeah, I think its an example of a band that should have made an awesome single and instead made a meh full-length.

I've only listened to it a couple of times, and I get the "meh" feeling from it, too.

Steady As She Goes is aight, but I don't think that feeling will last long.

It's only 33+ minutes long! Cheap bastards.

My review from last week's paper. Overall, I give it a big "meh".
Maybe it was already taken, but "Mutual Admiration Society" would've been a better title for this, the first product of the Raconteurs, the pairing of Detroit indie rock bright lights Jack White and Brendan Benson.
Benson, heretofore an acclaimed solo power pop artist, and White, the White Stripes' leader, have long been linked in music circles and their collaboration - along with members of Cincinnati's Greenhornes - doesn't always meld the best parts of each artist's repertoire even though there are some highlights.
The most obvious is first single "Steady as She Goes," with its loping bass and drums opening and White's vocal intro that leads to a full rock four-piece treatment.
It's disarming at first hearing White outside the constraints of his normal two-piece outfit and on several tracks (the see-sawing "Store Bought Bones" or "Yellow Sun," where Benson takes the lead), he fits easily into a less-dictatorial creative role.
But as with any (likely) one-off collaboration, there are songs that never figure out their true identity. "Intimate Secretary" unsuccessfully tries to merge the Stripes' lyrical mystery with Benson's sunny pop sense, and "Together" never manages the tenderness its heartfelt lyrics require.
A handful of enjoyable tunes aside, "Broken Boy Soldiers" is most valuable for giving Benson some deserved media rub (Rolling Stone has been all over the band) and showing White out of the creative maze in which he's sounded close to becoming trapped. In the end, it's enough to redeem what started out as not much more than a dual ego stroke.

This is one of the reasons I love this album. They're in, out and they're sleeping before things get messy and boring. I think this will have staying power for me. I give it high marks and as it has been mentioned several times already, one of the my favourite opening tracks since 'Slow Night So Long'.

Totally agreed on the length being a good thing in this case. Funny that you mentioned Slow Night So Long, as I'd put Aha Shake Heartbreak in that category as well.

I'm listening to it for the first time right now. I like it. Not my favorite of the year or anything but good nonetheless. The song about the sun was very enjoyable.

I guess I'm meh on it too. I really like Steady as She Goes and a couple of others are decent but I've been through it several times now and it basically just sounds like what it is - a side project.
