Horrible. Seriously. And I was only slingin' beer, no drinks.

bartending school is a waste of money. The only people I've ever known to go to those have ended up working in hotel bars and the like, which is admittedly awesome, but probably not for the enjoyment of it.

every one of my bartenders (about a dozen that I knew well enough to talk about this with anyway) have just applied or been at the right bar at the right time or known ahead of time.

or been waitstaff and moved up to that. I would not suggest this last route.

I think it'd be fun to be a bartender if I were independently wealthy. But no, no bartending experience here.

One of my best friends is a bartender in Toronto. He's told me a share of horror stories and hilarious stories. The money he makes is pretty fair coupled with the constant stream of drinks he has all night, he likes it quite a lot. Mind you, he's got the right temperment for that job because I've literally never seen the guy angry, so that probably helps dealing with drunks.

I took a one week crash bartending course many moons ago....

What I learned...
1. 90% of the time, people will order the same 15 core drinks...Then you learn about 10 drinks which are customary to the area in which you bartend....
2. When in doubt, give em something blue. Most people will drink a blue drink.

My first job was at a hotel bar. The bar manager was a severe ballbuster. Every single bit of alcohol had to be measured out before the drink was made....I made my real money bar backing at the weddings that were held....

Dragging ice and glasses to 5 different cash bars for two weddings, (4 over a weekend)...I sometimes went home with $600 bux for two days worth of work, after being tipped out by all the bartenders....

Then unfort, i got my musoic industry job and havent seen that kind of money since......well, thats not true! but it aint as easy! :)

What I'd like to see is a drunk bartender. I guess that'd put their job in jeopardy, but I still want to see it. I've seen 'em do SHOTS, but nevera drunk off their ass person slingin' booze.

I'd never want to do it....love being a drunk but hate being around drunks when I'm not one myself.

I'm afraid it would ruin booze for me.

I've seen a few. They usually don't last long unless it's the owner/manager, if which is the case pull up a chair and get ready to get wasted.

My friend Ashley passed out while bartending. Of course, she was promptly fired, but it was funny for a little while.

Actually, I didn't get paid a wage, but I was allowed to drink for free while working and could bring my own music.

Sounds good, but trust me, lugging an overfilled trash can downstairs while full of bottles, stale beer and topped off with a couple dozen ashtrays is no picnic.

AND, in most places, bar backs get to clean the bathrooms. I would rather clean a meth lab trailer that exploded with babies in it than fucking touch the toilet in places like The Roadhouse or City Bar on a saturday night.

I would need a level-5 decontamination suit. BLECH.

I read 'babies' as barbies at first and didn't read it correctly until you responded. It made much more sense after that.

Bartended for a pretty short streetch many moons ago. If you're in a bar where you like the mood, music and crowd, it can be pretty fun. If you don't really like the environment, pouring drinks ain't gonna make it better. And, its more work than a lot of people assume...on your feet constantly, lots of running around if it gets busy, dealing with belligerent drunks, etc...

You can make some decent cash if health benefits aren't an issue for you...or having weekends off...or seeing the daylight...

OH...and I've seen a few shit-faced bartenders. One place I go fairly regularly has a nice guy that usually tends bar, but every now and then the guy who owns the place will show up and get behind the bar when he's absolutely hammered and start insulting the patrons and serving no drinks other than cans of beer bacause he's too lazy to mix anything or open a bottle. He's getting older now and hasn't done it in quite some time...been years since I've seen it, but it used to be a fairly regular occurance. Annoyed the shit of some people, but I always got some laughs outta it.
