This week I pulled their classic album Mind Bomb (1989) out from my cd collection and damn, if it still doesn't sound great after all these years.

Image

Dark, deep, brooding and moody, Mind Bomb is anti-Christian, and has great crossover appeal to fans of alternative rock, goth, and even has a little INXS and Sweet influences that can be heard in it. There's even a great duet with Sinead O'Connor on it to boot. Surprisingly, I never purchased any of their other albums but I hear that Dusk is also good.

A review of this album by someone else:

Not often, but once in a great while, a truly fabulous work of art is created. It is not a feat that is only achieved by artists who are known to be great; as evidenced by The The's "Mind Bomb", it is sometimes done by artists who are little known at all.

Ranking very near, if not at the top, of the greatest albums of the Modern Rock era, 1989's "Mind Bomb" is not merely a collection of eight songs, but a seamless, flowing journey through the darkness and light of the human condition.

While the star of this show might not be a household name among those who were fortunate enough to grow up in the amazing alternative rock culture of the late eighties and early nineties, one of the supporting actors certainly is. Johnny Marr, former guitarist of The Smiths, is far more in the background here than in the places we know him best, even appropriately adding background vocals to his repertoire of enormous musical talent. Only in the one song co-written by Johnson and himself, "Gravitate to Me", is any sign of Marr's signature guitar style obvious and near the forefront. That is not to take anything away from his contributions to the work as a whole - quite to the contrary; they are ever present, only very different from what we have come to expect. Moreover, the music of "Mind Bomb" is symphonic in nature, and not centered on the guitar-as-primary-instrument. Far more prominent are sounds which do not typify the everyday music of that time, or in truth, anytime.

Point in fact, Mark Feltham's harmonica and Wix's piano and organ contributions create the ambience that defines this album's feel. There are also horns and strings, shadowy vocals both evil and ethereal, odd percussions... all special and necessary, lent by almost innumerable guest artists. David Palmer's drums are as polished and perfect as could be, not generally dictating the meter of the music - but instead adding punctuation to the poetry of the arrangements. James Eller's bass brings elements of warmth and simplicity which balance well against the occasional harshness of both the music and the message. Together, they all speak as one.

After over a decade of consideration, I am still grappling to understand exactly what that story is; that is, in my opinion, the true genius of "Mind Bomb", beyond the music itself. After listening to it in it's entirety what I would estimate to be about 3500 times, I am still fascinated by it. It is aptly named. Perhaps there is nothing more than essence, maybe no story to tell at all. But few albums make the listener perceive one in the way this one does. I won't make any suggestions regarding what I believe that story to be - every person should be entitled to their own. But do listen, and find it. It is life changing and profound, while still sounding new after fourteen years.

In summary, The The's "Mind Bomb" to me represents one of music's finest hours. Standing shoulder to shoulder with the towering Modern Rock works of that period, like U2's "The Joshua Tree", The Cure's "Disintegration", The Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Blood Sugar Sex Magick" or Nine Inch Nails' "Pretty Hate Machine", it is one of those albums you simply MUST own. When ultimately I die, it will be one of the CD's(?) that play in perpetuity in my mausoleum; I could never find peace without this music.

Any fans or opinions regarding this or any of their other work?

I've always been partial to Soul Mining.

Weird thing is it leads off with the hit, but I always think that song doesn't really fit well with the feel of the rest of the album, so I usually skip it and play the rest of the thing straight through.

While MB is the angriest and most impressive, SM is the one I listen to most.

My personal favorite has always been Mind Bomb as well...still listen to Dusk and Soul Mining a bunch but Mind Bomb is the album I most frequently go back to....especially for this song....tell me it isn't every bit as appropriate today as well this album came out 17 years ago:

Armageddon Days Are Here

They're 5 miles high as the crow flies
Leavin' vapour trails against a blood red sky
Movin' in from the east toward the west
With balaclava helmets over their heads, yes!

But if you think that jesus christ is coming
Honey you've got another thing coming
If he ever finds out who's hi-jacked his name
He'll cut out his heart and turn in his grave

Islam is rising
The christians mobilising
The world is on it's elbows and knees
It's forgotten the message and worships the creeds

It's war, she cried, it's war, she cried, this is war
Drop your possessions, all you simple folk
You will fight them on the beaches in your underclothes
You will thank the good lord for raising the union jack
You'll watch the ships out of harbour
And the bodies come floating back

If the real jesus christ were to stand up today
He'd be gunned down by the c.i.a.
Oh, the lights that now burn brightest behind stained glass
Will cast the darkest shadows upon the human heart
But God didn't build himself that throne
God doesn't live in israel or rome
God belong to the yankee dollar
God doesn't plant the bombs for hezbollah
God doesn't even go to church
And God won't send us down to allah to burn
No, God will remind us what we already know
That the human race is about to reap what it's sown

The world is on it's elbows and knees
It's forgotten the message and worships the creeds
Armageddon days are here again

Virgin had a bunch of their albums on sale for $8 but I didn't know which one to get so I didn't get any (I got other stuff though, I'm not that dumb).

Infected, but the extended version of Soul Mining is damn good too. I spun Mind Bomb last week and it sounded really good, but Infected will always be my favorite album* of theirs.

* I think their best release was the Heartland EP.

he was the man, where did he go? Matt Johnson?

She was lying on her back/with her legs parted/screaming like a stuck pig/I was going through the motions/faking the emotions
I dunno what song this is, but I still remember it well.

with lyrics like that....

He must be up to something. The last non-comp one was 2000's Naked Self which I think is his weakest album.

I like that Burning Blue Soul can now be bought as a The The album instead of under Johnson's name, cause it's a good rekkid.

Has anyone ever heard the unreleased Spirits from 1979? I never have. Don't know if there are bootlegs. Johnson supposedly has two other early unreleased albums from 1980-81 The Pornography Of Despair and an untitled one. I'd like to see him put those out.

Soul Mining has my 2 or 3 favorite songs...Mind Bomb is the one I'm most impressed by...but the one of Hank Willliams Covers is probably my overall favorite.

And yes Dusk is really good too. Infected is probably the only one I don't like.

Gawd, that is such a sexy song. I've not heard that album in yonks as I only have it on vinyl.

The only one I know in total, is [i]Mind Bomb[/b], and it's incredible. You're right, it still does hold up almost 20 years later.

But I have heard bits and pieces of the others and this thread reminds me that I need to pick some of those up.

Thank you Obner! (again)

I am in love with Matt Johnson.

A couple of years ago I bought Soul Mining on vinyl and became totally obsessed with it.

Mind Bomb is the record that got me into The The. I guess I had seen the video for "Kingdom of Rain" with Sinead O'Connor... and it blew me away.

He has one of the best and hottest voices ever. So low and rich and such a good jazzy/souly sensibility. I can totally hear the comparison to Micheal Hutchence.

The path of least resistence leads to the garbage heap of dispair

I don't know if I'd call him anti-Christian per say. He's a thinker, a guy on a spiritual/intellectual quest, so questions everything. I'd say what he rails against is much more than any particualr religion is blind group mentality. IMO.
