Now, why wouldn't he play his hometown?
Damn!

Would've been a great bill, but I guess Prine can headline here all by his lonesome.

So this was one of the best shows I've seen all year.

Jim James' voice is stunning. The best instrument they have at their disposal.

They played almost the entirety of Z and several It Still Moves songs as well. I haven't heard At Dawn (other than what's on Okonokos) but I know they did "At Dawn" and "Phone Went West". I had to look up that one because it was particularly good. Sounded like a pseudo reggae tune.

The only slight disappointment was that Jim James used a backing vocal track on some songs, in particular, "Wordless Chorus". I guess you kind of have to since the chorus is, well, wordless. The lead guitar player did some singing with him but those HUGE choruses and harmonies simply can't be duplicated live without over dubs I'm assuming. I'm no vocal tech but he may have really been pulling it off with a lot of reverb.

Regardless, it's a minor beef because they sounded fucking amazing and almost every song ended in some sort of rave up.

Highlight for me was "Steam Engine". I've had it in my head since Sunday. Sounded so fucking sublime:

Take your money and your DRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGSSS!!

Fantastic band.

I think he was using a vocal processor...it can create harmonies...when you add all the reverb that he used during that song...it can smooth out everything and make it sound like that.

GD I'm so mad I was out of town and couldn't go to the Charleston show last week. I'll catch them next time around, hopefully. At least I have the live DVD to watch.

I saw them at the Ryman in Nashville last night, and while the show was great, I felt they were tad bit subduded and maybe a little intimidated with the venue. Jim brought up a few times that they were really nervous about playing there.
Once again, the Ryman proved to be the best sounding room that I've ever seen a concert.
My favorite MMJ moments have come in small clubs however. They still hold the place of one of the best live bands in America, but I wasn't completely floored by last night's gig.

I*'ve got tickets for both Dec. 30 and Dec. 31 at the Filmore.

I am looking forward to these shows more than any in a long, long time.

I think that's my favorite part of any MMJ song.

That whole song is great. "None of this is physical, at least not for me."

Same favorite MMJ song, different favorite part:

You're skin looks good in moonlight
and god damn those shaky knees...

Oh, and I'll be attending the Champaign show next month. Methinks it's a good year to be a MMJ fan...

I missed them. The guy I stood next to said they were okay.

I nursed a pretty nasty hangover the day of the show and didn't start drinking for the show until late. I stayed out in the parking lot like a teenager and finished some beers instead of seeing Wax Fang.
