I recently started organizing my collection in excel, to see if I could make a top 20 for every year, or even just a top 10. I'm finally mostly done. It's funny, I can't even make a top twenty for almost any year between '65-'00 with a couple of exceptions! It's also very interesting to see where the gaps are in my music collection. In my case, I have the 70s, early 90s and early 00s cornered but the entire decade of the 80s and the last half of the 90s are woefully underrepresented.

I was thinking it would be interesting to start a thread series in which I ask you to give me your top whatever for a given year. You would simply rank however many records you have for that year. It could be 5 albums, 10, 30, or 50. I don't think this is as relevant for the years 2000 on (because there are SO many records being released now), so I would just stick with '65-'00. I would paste lists of albums from the years compiled from various sources to jog your memory as to what was released that year.

Anyone interested in doing this? It would certainly help me to fill in some gaps from certain years and might stimulate some interesting discussion.

that would be really cool

I would think that the 50s and the early 60s would really have not a lot to offer in terms of albums. You should do singles for those years.

More power to you folks for doing so. I don't own enough material to do anything worthwhile and am not ambitious enough to do so. I'd definitely check out everyone's lists once they get them compiled.

I will try, but I am just not organized enough to really make an accurate attempt.

Still, it will be fun to read.

I should be able to do all of the years in the 60s. I will just do the 50s as a decade. also i'm not doing a top 50 for each year, just a top 20 and if i dont have that much maybe a top 10.

I think we need something like this...the board has been awfully boring lately. I'm not sure my rankings would be super meaningful but I could try. I don't have my collection categorized by year but I think those best of threads you did last year have pretty good lists of most stuff that was good in a given year after everyone pitched in their honorable mentions.

np: Gil Scott-Heron "Winter in America"

Actually, you've been a big influence on me in terms of thinking outside of the box when it comes to filling in the gaps.

I'll see if I can dig out some of those old threads and maybe put one of the easier years up (like 1977 or 1971 or 1969 or 1991) today to see how it goes.
