According to Billboard.com, the Shins have completed their third album Wincing the Night Away. The album is expected to hit stores this January, though it was originally due out this Summer. Frontman James Mercer told Billboard:

"It would have been great to have released this a year ago, but the benefits [of waiting] are big. I'm constantly reminded of how much better the project gets as new discoveries are made. That only happens through taking your time and being able to approach it with some new perspective."

The band also noted that they'll hold off on touring until the release of Wincing the Night Away.

what exactly is the benefit of waiting until january to release an album? how's that working out for the strokes right now?

early-year releases constantly get left off year-end best-of lists and, thus, lose out on an extra boost of sales. i don't understand how this could pay off.

i guess i'm glad that they're thinking about making the album better as opposed to what will "pay off."

this had me under the impression that they'd completed the album - recording, mixing, mastering, artwork, etc. so... why the wait? i mean, i know it takes a few months to go from completion to leak to release, but 5+ months and then to release it in january? i don't get it.

i don't think they meant there's a benefit as far as marketing or selling the record. i think he means the benefits are on the artistic side. Mostly just sounds like he's trying to find the bright side of the fact that he's just a slow songwriter.

yeah, that is confusing. especially because he said: "I'm constantly reminded of how much better the project gets as new discoveries are made." how does a finished album get better?

maybe "completed" just means recording, not production, etc? if only we knew someone at billboard...

ah...

Quote:
Save for a handful of backing vocals, the set is completely finished and will be mixed in the coming weeks in Portland, Ore.

January is stupid. If it is done now, release it now. It will be leaked by then and anyone who really wants will have heard half of it. Also, January is always the slowest month in retail due to "oh my god I can't believe my credit card bill after Christmas" syndrome.

I agree it will be forgotten--look at January or February posts--of much of this is no longer on our list or even on our mind?

Every time I see this title, I think it's a Chumbawumba reference...and not in a good way :?

No no... I for one will still applaud the effort. It's the thought that counts.

Unless it REALLY sucks.

Well, after one listen, I'm VERY disappointed. There are a few good songs, but overall, this is nowhere near as great as their first two albums.

Still, that doesn't diminish the greatness of Timis for getting this to us way before anyone else!

Maybe it will eventually be a grower, but right now, it's more of a groaner.

Not to worry, Ky. I'm probably wrong. That's usually the case.
