Ok some thoughts on the ones from my original list that I've heard now:

Caetano Veloso – Ce

Only one listen so far, but screw Spade Kitty's 'mixed reviews.' I feel pretty comfortable saying its the best thing he's done in at least fifteen years and it could be his best album since the 1970's (although admittedly I haven't heard all his 80's work). His voice sounds as good as ever, the music is damn good, and it sounds more modern while never sounding schmaltzy like his last album did.

Irma Thomas – After the Rain

Not bad at all. Probably better than Candi Staton's 2006 release. I tend to think after listening to the newer releases of these classic soul artists that I might have been better off buying something I don't have from the 1960's or 1970's, but taken on its own merits its got a shot at my top 20 for 2006.

Chico Buarque – Carioca

Very pretty album with nice arrangements...seems a bit on the short side would be my biggest complaint. A definite top 20 album with a shot at my top 10.

Wanda Jackson - I Remember Elvis

Wanda Jackson covering Elvis Presley, if that sounds up your alley it probably is. Pretty much what I expected and hoped for when buying it. Another solid top 20 pick.

Built to Spill - In Reverse

No complaints. I like this and its got a chance at my top 20. Still given how nuts people went over it earlier in the year, I know that I like it less than most of the obnish.

Other stuff I'm adding to the probably need to hear:

Luke Haines (already on order)
Roddy Frame
Cosmic Rough Riders
Willie Nelson
Damien Jurado

Feel free to encourage or discourage any of those

hey billy, i just recently heard the new album by bert jansch and am really diggin it. i did a search and you seem to be the only person who's mentioned him before...so this might be one you wanna take a listen to if you haven't already.

unfortunately this is the first i've ever heard of him (which is probably criminal in it's own right), so i can't comapre it against his previous work. but this new one sounds good to me, and also includes some good cameo's by beth orton on a few tracks.

I've got to hear both of these.

You know I was going to ask you about that album when I saw it in your NP. I guess the only reason I'm not more curious about it is that I don't have a lot of Bert Jansch (one solo album and a couple of Pentangle albums) although I do like him. So I tend to think if I were to buy another Bert Jansch album, I'd probably get a different one. "Jack Orion" has been on my to buy list for a long time.

I know what y'all need to hear...

The new Christopher Willits album on Ghosty...

If you're into the sunshine-styled, "organic", poppy electronic music, this one's the bee's knees.

As far as what I have to hear, most of it is on my IPod - just haven't had enough listenin' time lately...

Lots of local stuff as well:
T 'n' T (Tim Rogers and Tex Perkins)
Sarah Blasko
Love of Diagrams EP
Devastations
Khancoban
plus some othersI have a list of somewhere

And all the stuff I've acquired but haven't been able to give good listens to yet

*Well aware that many think it disappointing. Still want to hear it though

With apologies to frostingspoon, that Scott Walker is GARBAGE; im pretty open minded and can usually find something nice to say about almost anything, but that's just not the case here. Unlistenable. The only 2006 release that I've actually deleted from my hard drive.

I still need to hear Califone, The Long Blondes and a couple others I've been seeing hyped in these parts recently. I'm also eagerly anticipating the new Jay-Z but I would be too scared of some hard pipe swingin niggas showin up at my door to listen to any sort of preview tracks. I'll wait for the release date.

I'm in the same corner as Catfish/Oldbullee on the new Bobby Bare Jr.: Its good and a decent listen but has nothing on his last two which really dissapoints the hell out of me.

I just got Willie Nelson's You Don't Know Me: The Songs of Cindy Walker and it's fucking unbelievable. Immediately Top 20 without question. Fans of Willie should hear this album.

Tommy Keene wrote, recorded and performed all the music. Bobby wrote the lyrics and melodies. So good.
Funny thing is that it's his most 'pedestrian' sounding release of the year. It's not my favorite but there's something undeniably great about it.

My vote's for 'Normal Happiness'.....oh, and there's 'From A Compound Eye'....then there's that song 'Be It Not for the Serpentine Rain Dodger' from 'The Takeovers' record. You get the idea-

Man, I'm the exact opposite. I think it is LIGHT YEARS BETTER than anything else he's ever done.

Yep, have Deep Cuts. Only got it a few months ago, after hearing the Jose Gonzales Heartbeats cover so many times got the original stuck in my head. Very good.

I wanted to get Silent Shout at the same time, but it hadn't been released here yet. Picked it up last time I was at a record store but put it back down cos I was already getting 4 seasons of The Sopranos that were on sale.

And just found out that The Walkmen are coming out in February for St Jerome's
