Would you feel so hesitant about people in that "situation" if we weren't at war? Is it just as bad to join the military if you're poor in "peace" time or is it ok then? The military offers you money for school after or even during your enlisted status. They try and create a more educated population from people that may not have been in the first place. The offer unbelievable benefits. Not the greatest pay, but you are taken care of, for the most part, for the rest of your life in some supplemental way at least. My brother-in-law is in the coast guard and is retiring in about 5 years (he'll be 41) and he'll get basically his pay for the rest of his life per year. The only downfall: in a time of war you may die. However, I do think it is ludacris to essentially insinuate that uneducated people are in the military because even if that's true, the military does what it can to make education an option for you that may not have existed before.
