New Line: Hey, let's make the Hobbit.
Jackson: Well, you owe us money from the first film. We'll be happy to make the film once that's resolved.
New Line: Sorry, we don't have time for that. We're going on without you.

Ten bucks says New Line also just lost McKellen and Ian Holm.

Um, was Jackson really that indispensable? I mean, the Lord of the Rings movies were decent, but...

decent? what the hell is wrong with you?

the ONLY person that should touch this project is Jackson. thew LOTR films are some of the best (if not the best) films ever created.

I thought Two Towers in particular, was pretty bad actually. The others were good, but putting them up on some sort of best ever list is pushing it a bit.

LotR's in my top five as well. As I understand it, Jackson built such a great rapport with most of the actors that McKellen joked about crawling around as work for King Kong auditions. It's possible that a decent (but not as good, IMHO) prequel could be made, but I'm not sure the original Gandalf or Bilbo would be OK being in it given the circumstances. Makes a big impact.

EDIT: The weakest thing about Two Towers were that the best parts of the book were in the third movie.

The scene in Clerks II where Randall describes the LOTR trilogy basically sums up my opinion on it, that said, Jackson should probably direct The Hobbit.

I refuse to believe those films didn't net enough $$ to cover any outstanding bills.

Step 1: Alienate the grassroots band of people who basically made LOTR a success (i.e. Onering.net peeps)

Step 2: Probably lose your best actors of the trilogy

Step 3: Rush this to the theaters thus ruining fantasy films for another decade.

Yes, but with Jackson and McKellan.

Not more of those Sci-Fi "dragon movie of the week filmed in the Czech Republic" things.

Step 4: Wring hands in frustration, ask aloud "what the hell happened?"

Pretty much we're gonna get a "cute" Hobbit movie.

While The Hobbit is a "cuter" story than LOTR, I don't want a "cute" movie. The book's too good to do that.

without Jackson, no Weta. and that makes the movies more distinctive than anything.
Also, this might mean no McKellan or Holm, which in essence would make the movies ridiculously seperate from the other three, and probably a very shitty idea.
