It would look like I was playing dress up with daddy's clothes, despite being 31 years old. I wouldn't be able to pull it off. And that's a shame, because I wish I could (but I still voted Half A Fag, because it was there).

I gotta disagree. It would be your own self-conciousness that was the problem. To passerbys, you'd just look like some guy with a cool hat (assuming it was indeed a cool hat). I've seen fat guys, skinny guys, tall guys, short guys all wearing hats. There is no specific guy that can or can't wear a hat. It's like saying you're just not the kinda guy who can wear pants.

You don't have to like hats. I couldn't care less if you hate them. But, if you do like thme, there is no reason you should be excluded from their wearing.

this actually came up at a business lunch a few months ago. the women all agreed that certain men simply cannot pull off a hat. i tended to disagree with them, but i have seen some egregious examples since then and am inclined to agree at least that certain hats don't fit certain men - just like any other wardrobe accesory.

I think certain styles can be pulled off fairly flawlessly in today's fashion world, but others just make you look eccentric. I enjoy "drivers/cabbies" occassionally, and I enjoy a short-brimmed fedora once in a great while. Since I've let my hair grow long, I haven't worn many hats though.

stylish hats on men look great. it states confidence and style. again, it's got to work with what you're wearing not look like it was just stuck up there as an afterthought. you don't have to be wearing a suit but just put a little thought into it.

filthy knit caps are just disgusting and baseball hats should be destroyed. men wear them everywhere, all the time. they never take them off indoors and wearing baseball caps in restaurants is a social travesty. i don't care if you're eating at wendy's, take that thing off. and guess what? i know you've had that cap since you were 19 but you 30 now and it's dirty and gross. roger clemens got away with this in the playoffs/world series a few years back but you're not roger clemens.

If you insist on wearing a baseball cap sometimes, get a nice fitted one. jesus, grow up guys.

ps-kyle, i could find a hat for you.

oh and women only wear baseball caps for bad hair days or if they're that kind of lesbian.

In trying to wean myself from baseball hats, I have begun to get shorter, more frequent haircuts. The problem was that everytime I put a helmet on and went somewhere, it wreaked havoc when I took it off, so I was carrying around a baseball cap to put on when I arrived. With shorter hair, it's fine. win-win.

THANK YOU. Also, not taking your hat off for the National Anthem = FIRING SQUAD

I usually avoid wearing baseball hats to sporting events for that reason. I hate having to stand around for a few minutes with horrendous hat hair, plus I'm usually going to a bar after the game and don't want to wear a hat for over half the day.
The only baseball hat that I wear on a semi-regular basis is my fitted Husker hat from the first CWS trip Nebraska made.

No ball caps ever. And anyone caught in public wearing one adjusted huge so that it fits down over their ears should immediately be put to death by choking on Walt Disney's cryogenically preserved testicles.

I would be unable to wear a hat without coming across as making it a big joke, or being ironic.

Thus the only hat I own is a pirate hat.

I've been growing my hair out, and it's much longer now (not down to my shoulders or anything, but longer). I'm the opposite though -- putting on a helmet and riding around makes it look nice. My hair is very wavy, so without that, it just kind of curls up at the ends in a way that makes it look big and weird, but the helmet straightens it out a little and makes it look tres sexy.

I had discernable lines on the back of my head where the padding is in my helmet with longer hair, especially if I left the house right after a shower. Tres sexy indeed.

I never thought about that, because I don't really ever think about the back of my head. I should take a look sometime. :)

Yeah, these were a little more boxy than the classic fedoras--early 20th century shit but you know what i mean. I wish I was cool enough to pull of something like this:

This hat (come to think of it, as would most) would require suitably similar attire, such as a comfortable linen suit. The problem I think with hats is that the clothes people wear under them are not in keeping with the hat.
So:
Clothes make the man, the hat makes the clothes, therefore: a man is his hat.

A Clockwork Orange?

With all due respect to Mr. Crack I cannot support the wearing of hats by men except under the following circumstances:

a.) You are a captain of a pirate ship
b.) Cowboy rodeo and you're riding the bull
c.) You've become the pope
d.) Ushanka *
e.) active military

* (and only if the following conditions are met: Russian, cold outside, and you have personally killed and skinned the rabbit yourself)

Also berets on men, even French men look retarded.

Hats generally look terrible on me and they make my head sweaty, although I do rock one of those knit ear-flap beanie things WITH CAT EARS sometimes. I jokingly requested someone make one for me, then lo and behold, it was in my hands a week later.

Big fan of these on the right man..

Truer words never spoken
I basically only shop at thrift stores and target, and I typically look pretty good. It's all about mix and match.
