The NFL is apparently figuring that there's only one way to top this year's completely epic performance by Prince at this year's Super Bowl, and that's to bring in The Boss. From Variety:

Bruce Springsteen and Norah Jones are at the top of the list. The NFL is hoping the recent successes of Prince, the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney can be used as leverage to bring in the Boss while Jones would be ideal to sing the National Anthem during the pregame ceremonies, according to NFL VP of programming Charles Coplin.

The league is starting to approach performers "earlier than ever before in our history," said Coplin. "The music business is going through some hard times. Performers care deeply about their album sales, and an appearance on the Super Bowl can move the needle dramatically."

Coplin points to the sales that followed Prince's performance at this year's Super Bowl. His overall album sales in the follow-ing week more than doubled to 31,000 and his digital downloads rose to 102,000 from 59,000.

It's shocking to me that the half time show had that effect on Prince's sales. I see the half time as a miserable failure no matter who's performing but apparently there are people out there who actually think it's great. Are there that many people who didn't know who Prince was before Super Bowl Sundy, heard a song released 20 years ago and ran to the music store the next day?

first of all, if they're concerned about topping prince's performance from this year with the boss next year, how do they figure they'll top it the following year? or do they not care?

do you know how many people who'd watch a super bowl probably forgot about prince in the last 20 years, especially after the "slave" incident? everyone was talking about that halftime show, so everyone wanted in on it. i would be willing to bet serious money that the majority of those buys, especially the digital ones, were by people under 20. they never had prince the first time around.

how does the boss beat Prince?

That'll be almost as good as Sheryl Crow playing the Steeler's playoff game last year. (Maybe it was preseason, but she still played the stadium at a game and it was teh suck.)
