Matthew Sweet/Suzanna Hoffs - Under the Covers thing?
I've only heard one song and, as a fan of both of them, I was sorely disappointed. Is the rest of the album just as blah, or does it have redeeming qualities?

I like both as well and thought this sucked. Note for note covers. Bland is the correct word.

straight up pop/rock covers is more like it. obviously the melodies of these familiar songs weren't altered, but they did take some orchestral pop, folkie rock, and various other sounds and put them through the Sweet filter.

Yes! One of my favorites. Simultaneously, his Sun Kil Moon cover album of all Modest Mouse tunes is TEH serious sux0rz.

I love Matthew Sweet but the songs I heard off of this were embarrassingly bad in a sickenly sweet, AOR type of way.

I like these:

Os Sambeatles - Bossa Take on the Beatles led by Manfredo Fest

Elvis Costello covers country greats George Jones, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, Gram Parsons, etc.

I wouldn't call it a stinker, though I can understand why others would. It's interesting - Lennon is in fine form throughout, but Phil Spector's production is (let's call it) misguided. Still, the versions of "Stand By Me" and "Ain't That A Shame" are pretty great.

DEFINITELY! They are masters at selecting outstanding, yet relatively obscure, covers.

Bongwater - Breaking No New Ground
I think fits into both categories.

Bizarro.

Not bad, not really good either. Scratching? Also the bass player didn't do the ... thingy... on the thing. It ... he didn't do the part I like on the chorus. I applaud her for aiming high.

I was just gonna mention that Replicants disc. It's an interesting one-shot from a couple of Tool and Failure members. Many bonus points for the fave Floyd obscurity "Ibiza Bar."

Shit, I thought my band was the first one ever to cover Ibiza Bar...

The Tori Amos one is pretty pretentious (trying to cover Slayer like that should be punishable by death)

That new Smithereens album which covers in its entirety Meet the Beatles?

My personal fave is Pussy Galore's take on "Exile On Main Street". Brutal.

What about Mark Eitzel's Music For Courage & Confidence?

It's pretty bad.

1. Snowbird
2. Ain't No Sunshine
3. Do You Really Want to Hurt Me
4. Help Me Make It Through the Night
5. I Only Have Eyes for You
6. Gentle on My Mind
7. More, More, More
8. Move on Up
9. Rehearsals for Retirement
10. I'll Be Seeing You
