As far as roommate reality tv routines go, this is better than Dancing with the Stars.
Although I've noticed they've got a lot of normal/goofy looking people on Idol.
I especially like the girl who looks like Shrek.

as pathetic as this showcase is, i found the little crying girl at the end to be sweet. the girl's about 9,10,11. the show's been on almost all of her life. yada yada do the math. also, must be the dad in me. obviously, she doesn't know any better -- nor do the rest of those morons in attendance (there are more minorities on the judges' panel and contestants, than there are in the seats!)

Last night, right after they announced "british invasion" but before we knew who the guest stars were...

Wife: "So who's the singer from Herman's Hermits?"
Me: "Peter Noone, why?"
Wife: "Jodi (a friend) said her sister (flight attendant) just told her that he was just on her flight, and she didn't know who he was, and he got all pissed. Said 'well you'd know who I was if I starred on American Idol, wouldn't you? That's what kids your age watch, right?' I wonder if he'll be on tonight?"

...and sure enough.

edit: and thanks a lot, Busty, for getting "Ol' No-Neck!" in my head everytime I see Melinda. I like her, dammit.

double edit: Sanjaya is insufferably bad.

I must say, Melinda is an amazing singer. It's hard not to root for the woman.

Oh no problem. Yeah, if that "dude" doesn't get kicked off tonight, I'm washing my hands of this show.

How 'bout that little girl openly WEEPING last night? Wow!

Quote:
The family, I was told, obtained tickets on a website to attend a taping of "Smarter Than a 5th Grader" a day passage that included not just the taping of the show itself, but also the dress rehearsal of either "Grader" or "Idol." The fates were kind, and the mother and daughter found their way to the "Idol" rehearsal, where Ashley's waterworks began. Her prowess was quickly brought to the attention of "Idol" producers who summoned the clan to a ringside seat of honor at the final taping.

Her powers of speech slowly returning, Ashley revealed that while she was on stage she had been thinking that "this was the coolest thing ever." Asked whom she was supporting in the competition she named "Sanjaya, Melinda, Gina and Jordin" as her picks, refusing to narrow her vote down to a single choice. All my journalistic powers of persuasion, cajoling, bullying and insistence that on her vote might turn the entire competition, that "Listen to reason, young Ferl, there can't be four American Idols," would not convince her to name a single favorite. To my every argument, she would only repeat her mantra, "All Four: Sanjaya, Melinda, Gina and Jordin." And so the race begins in earnest, with tears at every step of the way.

I.
FUH.

And Sanjaya will not be kicked off, sadly. I have foreseen it. That means someone else must go... someone with a shred of talent.

The crying girl was priceless. I was openly guffawing at the television.

The crying girl was indeed hysterical.

I don't see Sanjaya getting voted off tonight. Although, I think Phil Stacey deserves to go. The guy is a bore.

I watched Idol last night for the first time this year. Seems to me there are two girls with real talent, and the rest of them are a pack of shrill losers that wouldn't even make the cut for an off off OFF Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie.

That crying li'l girlie should've put the target demographic in harsh perspective.

Phil's on my list of 4 candidates. Him, Gina, The only black girl who doesn't have a killer voice (and whose name will never stick in my head), and the fat youthgroup minister. It's one of those 4 who's leaving next.

Tell me you didn't cringe when he yelled out Fro Patro. That was lame in so many ways.

Howard Stern has started a weekly campaign to have his fans vote in and have Sanjaya stay on the show...There are a few websites dedicated to keeping him on as well, as a goof.

I think he'll make it a few more rounds and people will probably just give up.
