Quote:
Tomahawk Anonymous Tomahawk’s third release, Anonymous, links the outfit with the Native American culture that bore its name. A thirteen-track album that reverentially explores and reinterprets the darker, more recessed ancestral music created by North America’s indigenous people, the title reflects the countless individuals who contributed to these songs but went un-credited throughout history. At the turn of the millennium, Duane Denison (U.S.S.A, ex-Jesus Lizard) toured with Hank Williams III, frequently finding himself on Indian Reservations. “I was somewhat disappointed by the Native bands.” Duane explains, “They were usually very conventional, kind of blues and country type stuff, or too much like 'new age' music. I figured there must be native music somewhere that was more aggressive, spookier, and more kinetic.” Duane began to research the culture’s music; about a year into his research he found books that were written around the time of Teddy Roosevelt’s presidency, a period in U.S. history when Indian culture and artifacts were in vogue. The books, dated to the early 20th century, recorded transcriptions of the songs contained herein. The titles: “Totem,” “Mescal Rite 1,” “Song of Victory” are all true to the names uncovered by the people who originally transcribed them, although Duane says “Red Fox” was altered to be more accessible. One song, “Long, Long Weary Day,” is a non-Native American “parlor song” song of the same time period, and also un-credited. Now a three piece, Tomahawk recorded Anonymous in two-parts. Duane Denison and John Stanier (Battles, Ex-Helmet) recorded guitars and drums (respectively) in Nashville while Mike Patton (Peeping Tom, Fantômas, Ex-Faith No More) added vocals and samples at Vulcan Studios in San Francisco. Release date: June 19, 2007

I'm intrigued by this new idea of white people telling Native Americans how they should do things.

I'm glad my humor wasn't lost. Yes, I agree, though I'm also interested to hear it as well.

Though his quote about the native bands on reservations kind of makes it sound like this is where the project is coming from, I think that's mostly just careless phrasing. Digging up some old transcriptions and reinterpreting them in his own style doesn't really strike me as "telling Native Americans how they should do things." And really, what he's talking about with modern native bands is exactly what you'd find anywhere... walk into most bars or public squares in most parts of the country, and you'll find a band performing watered-down rehashes of traditional musical styles. To say that the injuns are doing this too isn't a particularly surprising or invidious claim.

Are Dennison or Patton Native American?

Does the project have the Tom Morello stamp of approval and whatnot?

Great album. Definitely not for the unadventurous listener, just like most things Patton, but it's a pretty cool listen. "Antelope Ceremony" has some shades of California-era Beach Boys-type vocals from Patton, while one of the later songs sounds like one of the later FNM vocals. While there are a few songs in English, there is a lot of Indian-style chanting from him throughout the majority of the album. How authentic it is is anyone's guess - I'm guessing he probably did his homework and if you listen to this at the wrong time, you will summon rain.

What is the deal with you guys? I remember being sort of bothered by this thread back when it first came up, but I didn't say anything. A guy isn't allowed to be "disappointed" by something?

The problem may have been more with his own expectations, but I can certainly relate to the sentiment of being disappointed by ethnic music (all over the world) being watered-down and muted out by the homogeneous influence of Western popular music styles. Denison went into Native America bars hoping to hear something different, something inspiring, and instead heard the same stuff he could hear anywhere else. To him, that was disappointing. Should he have somehow worded that differently so as not to offend anybody?

Color me disappointed.

I bought it this afternoon, and as I listen to it for the first time, I'm not thrilled.

There are no "songs," it's pretty atmospheric. Not many strong drum backbeats. If a song does get into a groove, it doesn't stay there very long. Lots of chanting & plucky guitars, crickets chirping and field recordings.

I don't think they should have released it under the Tomahawk moniker. At least there's a "warning" on the back cover you can read before you buy: All tunes are original arrangements inspired by Native American material from the late 19th century.

But damn, it's kind of a mess. Not my cuppa tea. There goes $12. :x

Yeah from the clips I've heard this seems more like something that would be released by Fantomas than Tomahawk.

That's a shame. I think it's one of the brighter moments of an already good year. Not a mess at all - just a challenging listen. A lot more interesting and fun than most of what the indie world is releasing. Anyone who liked any Fantomas releases would probably love this.

You could probably sell it on Amazon and make most of your money back. The current lowest price is $10.99. Offer it for $10.25 and it'll probably be out of your hands in a couple of days.
