I believe a few of you have been to this lovely country to the south. (Chase?) What do you recommend? What should I stay away from?

I'm thinking of taking my sponsored vacation to Argentina and possibly hopping over to Chile.

i have been considering a trip to buenos aires (as part of a vacation that would take me to rio and sao paulo too). the one thing that scares me a little bit is the rash of violence that i keep hearing about, but more in brazil than argentina. although, buenos aires apparently has a high kidnapping rate - whatever that means.

so, basically, i'll be checking in on this thread too.

Why Sao Paolo?

I've never been outside the airport and really should i suppose, but while its the largest city in S. America, its not generally thought of as a great tourist destination.

Good crate digging though from what i hear.

I wouldn't worry too much about violence in MOST of S. America as long as you exercise some common sense, be careful, and stay out of the drug trafficing areas.

Argentina is amazing, Chile is simply great. I'd rather visit Argentina again but would rather live in Chile. Buenos Aires has amazing food, great people, cheap prices, etc. It's like what NYC should be. I can't recommend it highly enough. We also spent a week in Ushuaia, which was pretty much where I should be living when this marriage falls apart and I go on a journey to find my native people. If we were doing the trip again I'd make it longer and hit up Bariloche and Valparaiso as well. still, I heavily recommend going to either place, and would go to either before I'd visit any other town that i've already seen.

I like this plan. But avoid the kidnappings.

It's been booked! I can't even tell you how fuckin' excited I am! I'll be gone from September 1 - 9, 2007...only a week, but I'm gonna do some research about extending my trip (at my own cost) a few days.

Duuuude...ARGENTINA!!! :rockbanana:

Dunno yet, but two points of interest are Iguazu Falls and Ushuia. Hopefully, I can squeeze them in during my stay.

if you do make it to ushuaia, i can recommend the hostal de bosque. nice garden apartments for hotel rooms, like 5 blocks from the main drag of town. although there's not much to that main drag.

Did you make it to Iguazu Falls? It seems that the Sheraton is the place to stay.

Did you fly or drive to Ushuaia? In doing a bit of research, I saw that it's about a 3+ hour flight from BA.

Truly, I wish to spend only 1-2 nights at either place. If I had a lot more time (and money), I'd spend more time.

flight. i would probably drive it next time, but it IS far. it's just a small town though, other than the glacier/penguins and eating a giant crab, there's not a whole lot to do. but it's spectacularly pretty. also there are so many tourists that you can get blasted at an irish bar and sing along to U2 songs. or at least, i did.

Oooh, thanks for the heads up! Do you know what time? I'll have to check it out when I get home tonight.

With regard to Ushuaia, it looks like I might have to pass since it'll still be winter. Apparently, not many flights go down there during that time of year. So, I'm thinking of sticking with the idea of Iguazu Falls and possibly Salta (seems to also have its fair share of spectacular sites).

I'm throwing this out there in case anyone would like to take advantage...

If anyone is interested in travelling to Argentina, I'm looking for a travelling companion. Hotel expenses are paid for. All you need is your airfare and other travel incidentals.
