damn. Such a grim reminder that we aren't "just" in Iraq. Sorry to hear about that, and many prayers to the family.

My buddy was in afghanistan for 3 years, I believe. Nat'l Geographic came over and got permission to film his unit (the segment is airing now), and as they were filming one night an IED blew up next to his truck on a hilltop. He lost his hearing in one ear completely, and partially in the other ear. A few others died. So he's back now, with a purple heart.

Watching that segment, with people targeting him, seeing him over there with a massive gun in his hand, then watching the bomb actually go off that almost killed him - I couldn't sit down during it.

Sorry to hear it. I consider myself lucky that mine came back in one piece.

My nephew put in a year there and came back with stories that will keep me awake forever. It is still a nightmare there that the media has "forgotten" about.

My condolences to you.

Here's the show.

http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/green-berets/description.html
The explosion they mention is the one I'm talking about. Killed 7 Green Berets and 2 of the film crew.

But the description says this: "But their window will be tragically cut short by the costliest IED (improvised explosive device) explosion so far in the war in Afghanistan—killing two soldiers, wounding five others and injuring the NGC crew."

Did the others who were wounded die later on?

The other description I found said what I quoted. At the time of the accident, all he would tell me was that some people died, he made it, and wasn't sure about his hearing yet. I hope it's the smaller number.

And for some reason I can't get a hold of him this last month. I'm pretty sure he was done now, home for good, but he hasn't written me back in awhile. [/threadjack]

I saw it about 3 weeks ago. Their site is terrible, Tania. Lemme dig around.

It appears they aren't airing it now, or at least a day-by-day search of their listings doesn't show it. But it's on Youtube. I searched "Inside the Green Berets" and found it in pieces, as well as promos and such. There's one that just shows the ambush/explosion, looks like. If you do watch any of it, they changed my friend's name to "Chris."

I'm so sorry about your buddy.

Afghanistan's why Punk Rock Roomie's crazy. Don't make a loud noise behind that boy in the dark.

Growing up, all my friends fathers were Vietnam vets, with attendant ongoing emotional and physical consequences. Here goes another generation of damaged kids who will be forgotten, damaged adults forever. You don't get better from war, far as I can tell.

I know tons of folks that went to Nam, Desert Storm and both of these theatres of operation that came out of it just fine. Just sayin'
