as an ex-Chicagoan, my favorite pizza places are as follows:

UNO's

http://www.unos.com/

Gino's East

Giordano's

Quote:
Chicago-style pizza is a specific variety of pizza. Pizza is traditionally considered to be a type of hearth cake such as focaccia. The Chicago-style pizza shares more in common with a casserole, such as lasagna. True Chicago-style pizza, a unique deep dish variety, features a buttery crust-cheese-chunky tomato sauce construction. There is some confusion between deep-dish and "stuffed" and "pan" pizzas, but it is for the deep-dish style that Chicago is most famous.

for breakfast: m henry, bongo room, tre kronor, and orange are probably the best bets for great (not just good) breakfasts/brunches. these places rule so hard that he will go back to wherever he lives and come to the realization that he can never be satiated by pancakes or french toast again. victory's banner is also really good, but only when it hits. and, unfortunately, it sometimes misses.

also, the best falafel in the midwest is at sultan's market just west of north/damen intersection.

WHERE in Chicago? It varies by neighborhood.
But, that said:
Best pizza = Lou Malnatti's
Breakfast = Walker Brother's (If he likes sweet stuff for breakfast, the Apple Pancake is insane!)
Latin = IrazĂș (Costa Rican)
Sandwiches = Cafe Colao
Ethiopian = Ethiopian Diamond
Korean = Korean Restaurant (original location was torn down, but I was told that they moved. Not sure where.)
Vegetarian = Amitabul

Oh, and the breaded steak sandwich at Ricobenne's is not to be missed, either!

i think the closest walker brothers is in wilmette. also, i'm going to say costello's is the best for american sandwiches. colao is a good puerto rican bakery, but costello's has numerous accolades for best sandwiches and they're pretty awesome.

Great sushi at Tank and great German food at the Chicago Brauhaus, both in Lincoln Square.

I second Sultan's for shawarma.

I also second Tango Sur, especially if your friend is a meateater.

Co-sign on Bongo Room. That's an absolute must visit. They are starring Oreo cookie/banana pancakes at the present.

Pizza -- there's Giordano's and then there's the rest. Gino's is a tourist trap and Lou Malnatti's is pretty poor, IMO.

Mi Tierra is killer Mexican on Kedzie.

And another breakfast/lunch place:
Heaven On Seven

Do the original location on Wabash, though.
Bananas Foster french toast, anyone?

yeah, this is the best menu i've seen there - better than last summer and way superior to the fall/winter menu that was highlighted by those banana smore pancakes and not much else.
