Everyone safe and dry right now?

Storms are still horrendous. This has to have been the nastiest day in eons. I keep hearing of all sorts of tornado sightings in the city and the burbs throughout the day. And trees down everywhere. Cars crushed by trees. Scary.

I almost got caught in it myself, I was about to leave a playgroup and just as I was leaving the sky turned black. Needless to say I stayed an extra two hours.

Watching that first round roll in from the west was incredible. I've never seen that much rain blowing in so fast. 80mph gusts.

I was eating lunch in a windowless conference area when everything hit - as I finished up and headed for the staircase, hundreds of people were heading down to the basement. A huge light pole and slightly smaller tree fell in the parking lot, but no people/cars were injured. A few vehicles did die horrible deaths when the drivers felt that it would be okay to drive through several inches of water. The bus I was on actually filled up with a few inches of water when the driver plowed through it!

i watched it from my office. it was spectacular. and then the metra took an hour to go what usually takes about 15 minutes because of trees down on the tracks. and it got to my station in the brunt of this evening's force. it was brutal. i was soaked after about 30 feet and that was with the umbrella. it took a little longer for my shoes to fill up with water, though.

My apartment's flooded due to a piece of plastic (garbage, really) covering the drain outside my door. First time it's flooded in three years and it just happened to be on the same day that I don't come right home from work.

My towels (I used all I have) are now in the dryer and will be ready for round two of drying the floor in about 30 minutes.

I'm pretty fucking pissed off right now. Apparently not as upset as some... while listening to the radio earlier, a guy from Winnetka called in and said, "This is just like Katrina." I somehow doubt that...

I wouldn't want to be that fence.

Jasmine, that totally sucks, I hope everything is ok and not totally fucked up.

The year before I married my now ex I was staying overnight at his parent's house, that night they had horrible rains in the area and in the middle of the night I noticed all electricity out. I woke my ex and we went downstairs, he opened the basement door only to find it under about 8 feet of water. Not good.

That was in 96. The western burbs were under tons of water from this storm, it was nasty. I worked at a spa/salon and the dumb bitch manager made us all come to work the next day even though most of us took over an hour to get there because of flooded streets. The electricity there kept going out too. Worthless. I should have quit that day.

I was 16 at the time and drove a Jeep. The streets around the house easily were under two-three feet of water. My friends and I had so much fun just barrelling down the street causing crazy splashing and probably even more destruction to people's lawns. Sounds childish, yes, but imagine how entertaining it was at 16. Classic!

Water in my basement, but everybody's safe.
Just some cleanup to do.

i get so excited and nervous when severe weather hits. what an amazing site to watch the storm from my office! the rain and darkness hit so hard and fast that it looked like dark dust was blowing off buildings. i wish i couldve gotten a good pic.

I slept on my couch last night, fearing that another storm would come through. And it did. Luckily I was spared any more flooding.

Totally unrelated: Why can't I see an interview with Judd Apatow? He was scheduled to be on Jay Leno last night, but instead a Matt Damon rerun was on. A few weeks ago he was on Conan and I fell asleep before I could see him. Frustrating.
