I'm serious. And if you know where I can find some mp3 recordings, that'd be awesome. I mean like the "yo ho ho" pirate-y stuff.

Probably not exactly what you're feeling, but:

Amalgamated Sons of Rest "S/T"
Mike Watt "Contemplating the Engine Room"

if you look at the end of the classical music section of a record store they usually a section of just "old stuff" like renaissance music and stuff. sometimes there will be sea shanties over in there.

Try Ween's "The Mollusk" Not sure if "The Blarney Stone" is exactly what you are looking for, but it's gotta be close.

Hmmm, have you heard Blueberry Boat?

I did a quirky little comp a few years ago that I called Pirates and Mermaids because I stated it out with some (duh) pirate and mermaid tunes....:)

1. Die Knödel - Knödelpolka from Overcooked Tyroleans
2. S.F. Seals - Kid's Pirate Ship from Truth Walks In Sleepy Shadows
3. Stephen Malkmus - The Hook from Stephen Malkmus
4. Ween - The Mollusk from The Mollusk
5. Pram - The Mermaids' Hotel from The Museum Of Imaginary Animals

http://members.mailaka.net/davey/comps. ... d_Mermaids

Kind of fun but wasn't quite the success I had in mind when I started to put it together. Got a bit bleak toward the end too.

I mentioned the latest CD that I bought from Wayne Robbins & the Hellsayers a few days ago in another thread, and it has some of that old time sea shanty sound mixed in, maybe as viewed through a Crazy Horse lens. Very, very cool CD.

If you enjoy sea shanties, I recommend reading PIRATES! In an Adventure with Scientists by Gideon Defoe.

Yeah I was just gonna write Rum Sodomy and the Lash, but there's not much sea faring on it other than the artwork

I wrote one once:

out on the wave
into the storm
hunting on the sea

weathering strong
a warrior's realm
sailor's drink whiskey

when the stars come out to play
they move about the night
to map our course like sparks to flames
for ships on the sea they guide

heave ho
into the blow
buckle down the stays

keeping her course
the bow up ahead
into the wind and waves

we hold our own around the horn
we reef the jib and main
a month may pass 'til early morn
for sailor's it's a day
