David Olney- Townes is quoted as saying that he used Olney's songs as benchmarks to judge his own song-writing. Generally folky- based songs, but with a dark element, at times sinister. I certainly would never think of writing a song about the Titanic from the perspective of the iceberg. Always wished Marty Robbins had lived long enough to cover Lonesome Waltz Of The Wind.

This was enough for me to download.

I realized the same thing with Stereolab.

I was thinking about doing Stereolab since I have pretty much everything by them and am very familiar with almost all of it. Same with Mouse on Mars. I just don't know if there would be a point.

I thought about doing some for some noise acts or something that I know no one would like or give a shit about.

It is absolutely incomplete, as there is nothing from Vintage Violence here. but I have none of that on my iTunes, and am only first getting familiar with that record.
Still, otherwise a pretty good representation of his best years, I think.

I could probably do a Fall mix.

I'm only familiar with a small portion of their catalog, but it wouldn't be hard to come up with 10 great tracks spread out over 6 or 7 albums. I think a lot of what I'd pick is either on that 50,000 Fall Fans comp or the Rough Trade comp, though.

If I can sneak some time on the station's old turntable I'll do a Gordon Lightfoot tenner of mostly non-Gord's Gold tracks. His well known songs are awesome but there's a boatload of non-epic melancholy/pretty folk tunes in his ouevre as well.

The problem with the fall is there are a bunch of really good comps out there already. If you are going to try to do something much different you need to sort through tons of material. How many albums do they have? I think its close to 30 proper studio albums and probably pushing 100 overall including live sets, comps, and various b-side/rarity material. I have a ton of the Fall but I'm not up for that task.

I thought about this (as really it's about the best I can contribute here), but ran into the problem of tracks being too long for a "sampler" type mix. Tried with Charalambides, Double Leopards (Marcia Bassett), Yellow Swans, and Heather Leigh Murray, and none would fit onto regular CD. May try to do a Chasney, Marissa Nadler, or Castanets this afternoon as I guess those would at least be something.
