Like the Wildhearts, this one should really be offered by Diggity Dawg. Also like the Wildhearts, there's probably not that many Obners who are gonna like this - it's high energy, extremely melodic rock 'n' roll with a punk energy and a pro-tools sheen. The debut still ranks in my top 10 of this decade.

More on the country side:

Iris Dement

I don't have her last CD, which I think was more spiritual than country, so I included a couple of duets with John Prine:

3. We Could (with John Prine)

Also, I think I'd like to take a crack at some Bobby Bare too. There is a need for more country tenners too.

I noticed that there wasn't much country too. I could do Emmylou Harris, but she didn't even get a single vote when I polled obners on what tenners they were interested in. I have a ton of Johnny Cash but so do a bunch of people here. I thought about trying to do a Rodney Crowell one but i think i'd have to buy an album or two more of his to really do him justice. I also thought about Kris Kristofferson but I think the "Kristofferson" album is so much better than his others that I'd have a hard time having it not end up at least half off of that.

Definitely do Emmylou. I was considering it, but always backed off when I realized I only have a handful of her albums. So please, for the love of Jesus, do it.

Also, to whoever did that Gomez mix, THANKS. Another one I wanted to do based on my love of How We Operate, but I only have one other album from them.

System of a Down

Those unfamiliar with System of a Down likely have this image in their head of a Slipknot-esque nu-metal band. After all, there was a phase where they dominated the covers of magazines like Circus and its ilk. Yet their popularity has always been a mystery to me... not because I don't like them (far from it), but because they are simply too weird to be popular in the mainstream. And yet somehow they managed to be themselves and yet be popular. More power to them. They have some of the biggest pay-off choruses known to hard rock, which is wrapped by some crazy-ass weirdness-cum-numetal. It is an odd mix, and one which is so unique that few have even tried mimicking it, let alone succeeding (Japanese band Maximum the Hormone comes the closest that I've heard).

Sorry about the huge picture, but it was the best I could find.

01. Dreaming (Hypnotize)
02. Peephole (System of a Down)
03. Chop Suey (Toxicity)
04. Old School Hollywood (Mezmerize)
05. Nuguns (Steal This Album!)
06. War? (System of a Down)
07. Violent Pornography (Mezmerize)
08. She's Like Heroin (Hypnotize)
09. Mr. Jack (Steal This Album!)
10. Lonely Day (Hypnotize)

...This is probably single-handedly the mix I'm most proud of so far.

Mouse on Mars

Image

Mouse on Mars is maybe the greatest "electronic" group ever (sorry Kraftwerk). Their music is fun and often danceable, but it doesn't conform to the rigid repetitive structures of most electronic dance music. They also handle slow, prettier numbers masterfully. They aren't what I'd consider ambient music, but a lot of their stuff can be pleasant in the background or calming and meditative. They can also be fierce and abrasive, like on their most recent album. There's a dubby reggae influence in most of their music from the '90s, and this decade has shown them exploring all sorts of unique and interesting areas. Since adding their drummer in 2001, they perform like a band and put on one the most fun shows I've ever been to.

This mix kicks off with a collaboration with Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab (kinda linking it with my previous mix) on a slower, kind of dreamy song. Then on "Tamagnocchi" they get in a Krautrock groove which now sounds to me a lot like what Fujiya & Miyagi did nearly 10 years later. "Yippie" is ska on some kind of speed/mushroom combo, somehwat familiar sounds played on unidentifiable "instruments", a signature of Mouse on Mars. "Gocard" is the oldest and possibly best track on this mix, beautifully warm and showcasing their reggae influence. I don't know if the bass on this mp3 of "Shamp Hare Rama" is quite as deep and powerful as it is on the vinyl EP I have, but it's still a really fun track. "Untitled States Of" is probably my favorite they've done this decade, really perfecting their take on dance music with a great melody and their usual rich textures. The next two tracks don't have my full endorsement quite like the rest of this mix, but they provide a sampling of their most recent work. "Wipe that Sound" is their most conventional attempt at pop (but still pretty weird), and Düül is probably the heaviest, noisiest track they've ever recorded. (Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma did supposedly meet at a death metal concert, after all.) "Catching Butterflies with Hands" is one of their more psychedelic compositions, and closing out the mix is another strongly reggae/dub-influenced track, this one deeper and more immersive.

1. "Cache Coeur Naif" (Cache Coeur Naif EP - 1997)
2. "Tamagnocchi" (Autoditacker - 1997)
3. "Yippie" (Niun Niggung - 1999)
4. "Gocard" (Iaora Tahiti - 1995)
5. "Shamp Hare Rama" (Pickly Dred Rhizzoms EP - 1999)
6. "Untitled States Of" (Agit Itter It It EP - 2002)
7. "Wipe That Sound" (Radical Connector - 2004)
8. "Düül" (Varcharz - 2006)
9. "Catching Butterflies with Hands" (Idiology - 2001)
10. "Rompatroullie" (Instrumentals - 1997)

Thought I'd contribute to this mix project, hope someone likes these selections. I tried to stay away from the more popular tunes that most people were familiar with but also attempted to make an adequate cross section of the band throughout the years, cherry picking my absolute favorites.

Enjoy.

Tim Maia

Image

AMG Wrote:
The father of Brazilian soul music, Tim Maia never hid his true nature from his fans, his prospective employers, or the law. Iconoclastic, ironic, outspoken, polemical (but always humorous), and openly addicted to cocaine and marijuana, he was known for lightheartedly missing appointments and even big-time gigs, and also for being boycotted by recording companies, major TV networks such as Globo, and other media that didn't swallow his disturbing presence.

With his potent and flexible baritone tone, Maia was able to convey not only a happy and energetic dance feel, but was capable of inspiring sentiment in otherwise corny songs as well, like his hit "Me Dê Motivo" (Paulo Massadas/Michael Sullivan). Throughout his career, this flexibility was evidenced through the multitude of styles embraced by him: soul, funk, bossa nova (in the '90s), romantic songs, American pop, samba, baião, and MPB. In the '90s, he was discovered by younger pop stars who re-recorded several of his hits. This was the case of Skank, Lulu Santos, Ara Ketu, Paralamas do Sucesso, and Marisa Monte, not to mention Elis Regina, Gal Costa, and other established artists who have recorded his songs.

In the '70s, Maia started to record albums and do shows promoting his indigenous synthesis of American soul and Brazilian music with elements of samba and baião. The movement gradually took the working-class suburbs of the north side of Rio de Janeiro, exploding in 1976 with the black movement.
