Waterboys head Mike Scott only has four releases under his own name and two are fan club only releases but they're mighty impressive and hold up to the band's output.

Ducks Deluxe

Another one of those "missing link" bands, stuck between eras in that odd limbo of 1974 - 1976. You can hear the coming encroachment of '77 in the buzzsaw guitars of "Don't Mind Rockin' Tonight" and "Coast to Coast", as well as the pub rock dependence on crowd pleasers ("I Fought the Law") and a leftover 60s love for the Band ("West Texas Trucking Board"), the Beatles ("Please, Please, Please"), and Stax/Volt slow burners ("Falling For That Woman"). Members of the Ducks would go on to play a slightly larger role in the punk boom years, with a couple joining Graham Parker's Rumour and another forming the Motors. Unlike his bandmates, leader Sean Tyla chose to ride the train to nowhere by resisting punk and instead forming the greasy, hard rocking (and fairly excellent) Tyla Gang.

1. Coast To Coast
2. Daddy Put the Bomp
3. Please, Please, Please
4. Fireball
5. Don't Mind Rockin' Tonight
6. West Texas Trucking Board
7. Paris 9
8. Something's Going On
9. Falling For That Woman
10. I Fought The Law

I know that this is one of those bands that gets held up along with Brinsley Schwarz as one of the great English pub rock bands. I'm looking forward to this.

If Mike Mills sang lead for the "Wendell Gee" and "Oddfellows Local 151" and "Lightnin' Hopkins" aspect of R.E.M. you get something similar to Murray Attaway & Company, with a little bit of Drivin' N Cryin', Smithereens and several alcoholic, deviant uncles & pastors mixed in.
Excellent band with a small discography.

Grant Lee Phillips

ok ive figured out the computer crap and am now offering my first download - Grant Lee Phillips. GLP was singer songwriter for Grant Lee Buffalo in the nineties. They also have a quality body of work - their first album Fuzzy is on my top 100 in the number 3 spot. Fuzzy is a little more mercurial and intense than GLP's solo stuff, but that doesnt mean Phillips solo stuff is any less good. In fact I think its more consistent than Grant Lee Buffalo. His songwriting is exceptional. If the world was fair hed be widely recognized as one of best singer/songwriters of the last 15 years. Anyway - his sound is a little bit folk, a little bit country, and a little bit rock - all those elements appear. I didnt include any songs off his first solo album, and only one of his second, as his last three solo albums are much better. I took 3 songs from his covers album of 80's songs because they are fine covers. Catch him live if you can, he brings a sharp sense of humor to his shows.

Anyway, enjoy!

Mona Lisa (from Virginia Creeper - 2004)
Age of Consent (from nineteeneighties - 2006)
Humankind (from Mobilize - 2001)
Fountain of youth (from Strangelet - 2007)
Wish I knew (from Virginia Creeper - 2004)
Lily-a-Passion (from Virginia Creeper - 2004)
I often dream of trains (from nineteeneighties - 2006)

The Gourds

[img][308:205]http://www.7dvt.com/files/musichole-gourds111407.jpg[/img]

Okay, now wait a minute. Before I end the board for good, just hear me out. I know these guys have a rep as a frat boy jamband nightmare ever since their mislabeled version of "Gin 'n' Juice", like, invented napster - but that take is unfair (although, I admit, if I was in college right now and was exposed for more than 30 seconds to the typical G'n'J sangin' fucker, I'd pencil them in right under AC/DC and Led Zep on my list of bands-to-maintain-a-lifetime-prejudice-against). But hell, I'm here to praise Caesar, not to bury him.

Truth is, the Gourds are closer to the tradition of the Band, steeped in Americana, but grabbing various music genres off the shelf at will and distilling them down to their hillbilly jugband "origins". I find it an amazing kind of alchemy at work - the dudes are either brilliant or they just seriously don't have a clue. I've seen them live though - and when the segue out of "Gin 'n' Juice" was the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" I pretty much became a believer.

I wasn't going to include "G'n'J" on this, but after compiling I figured it'd be interesting to tack it on the end. After hearing the previous 9 tracks, which range from outright Rick Danko mimickry to something close to soul, you might get a new perspective on that old trick.

1. My Name is Jorge
2. Ham-Fisted Box of Gloves
3. Best of Me
4. Ceiling's Leaking
5. Escalade
6. Hooky Junk
7. Pill Bug Blues
8. How Will You Shine
9. Everybody's Missing the Sun
10. Gin 'n' Juice

Rads, thanks for posting this. I actually only heard the Snoop cover about a year or so ago and was really curious to hear more. I was blissfully unaware of the frat aspect.

Agreed.
But, why so many cover songs? She was a pretty hotshit songwriter, too.

Because her covers are incredible. Also, Billy wrote that version of "A New England" for her, you can't have a MacColl mix without "Fairytale," and she could have made any Smiths song go from turgid to glorious had she so chose.

Like I said, I like all of her songs, so these are just the ten that struck me as right for this moment.

It's your mix, I was just wondering.
And that is a perfectly good answer for me.
Thank you.

Copyright

Image
Copyright rose from the ashes of the mighty Slow, and were by far my favorite band for quite a long while. Fuckers broke my heart too, just like the Dolls before them - and never lived up to their potential. They got close though; I still insist that this band's '91 debut is one of the best albums of that decade.

They got signed to Geffen on the basis of a locally-legendary demo tape (which they've never released but, I assure you, is so fucking excellent that words fail me). Trouble with Geffen started immediately, as the band insisted on naming itself the copyright symbol (this was before Prince went the same route, remember) - and after much drama, the debut got recorded with John Porter as producer (fresh off his work on the Stone Roses debut). Circle C, as it came to be known, was an amazing album. The band resisted verse/chorus/verse structure, and yet each song was imbued with hooks. You can hear snatches of classic bands like the Stones and Led Zep, but they're obviously reaching for something else here. I compare it to OK Computer, but 5 years earlier and by a band that could rock. The first six songs of this tenner are from that debut - see what you think.

And then it all fell apart. Geffen buried them. Their local live shows were fantastic, and they were writing scads of new material - but it took 5 years before they released their next album, and it was a colossal disappointment. Overly polished, with shamefully pretentious lyrics that truly deserved to be called pretentious. Only the song "Radio" is from that album - although I've included the never released "A-Frame" from that time period as well. Perversely, the band didn't include that song on the album.

And then another 5 years elapsed before album #3. If anything, it was even worse. There were some good songs, but some atrocious keyboard/synth sounds doing their best to wreck them. Also, leader Tom Anselmi's fascination with Brecht/Weill cabaret had turned this once transcendental band into a cheap three penny opera. The best songs were the Stonesy (almost) "Into the Light" and the just-plain-odd "Whatever Befalls Me", both included here.

And that's where the story ends. So far. Maybe one day they'll allow those original demo tapes to see the light of day, or even get the Slow stuff out on digital. But I wouldn't hold my breath for any of it.

1. The Climb
2. Epiphone Song
3. Dust
4. ?
5. State to State
6. R.S.V.P.
7. Radio
8. A-Frame
9. Into The Light
10. Whatever Befalls Me

No, I heard it because the Love Story cd came with a multimedia link to a great site where you could walk through the streets of the downtown eastside and find rooms, elevators, alcoves and such filled with info and photos of the band. If you got down to this certain basement you could play the Copyright demos - and I've tried recently to get back in there armed with the new technology of an audio extractor, but I can't find the damn site anymore.

Damn, I have that CD and never bothered to try the link. Well, like you said, hopefully they'll release it.

Their story reminds me of a Calgary band with a similar situation.

The Primrods

Image

The mid 90's were great for local rock acts in Calgary. By far my favourite band to come out of this time period was the Primrods. Like Copyright, they were signed to Geffen. And also like them, they have an album that didn't get released. They were dropped because of this merger. I managed to get an mp3 copy, which is poor quality, but will have to do. They did re-record most of the songs, but they were never as good.

01. Barbet Lad

03. Frances Gary Powers Offers You The Thrill Of A Lifetime

I didn't notice that I only included nine songs until after I uploaded this. I have a tenth song, Real Cuban Fire, here:

dl'ing that Primrods right now, Donovan.

Art Bergmann

[img][263:328]http://www.alexwaterhousehayward.com/blog/uploaded_images/Art%20smokes-760377.jpg[/img]

Often referred to as "Canada's Iggy Pop" or "Canada's Johnny Thunders" as if either appellation was a compliment, Bergmann is another one of those mercurial talents that did pretty much everything in his power to fritter away his potential.

I would've liked to include more stuff from a wider array of albums, but I've got most of it only on vinyl and was too lazy for that whole analog-digital rigamarole. So this tenner hues only to the best of Sexual Roulette and Art Bergmann. Nothing from the John Cale produced Crawl With Me, nor anything from his work in previous bands Poisoned, Los Popularos, or the Young Canadians (for that stuff, just dig in to some of the monger mixes in the mix forum). Pretty much everything he ever touched is now out of print.

1. Bound For Vegas
2. (She) Hit Me
3. Ruin My Life
4. Sexual Roulette
5. If She Could Sing
6. Baby Needs Oil
7. Crackin' Up
8. The Hospital Song
9. Faithlessly Yours
