Listening back to it, I think anyone downloading might want to move "Goodbye Look" above "Trans-Island Skyway" because of the concert chatter at the end of the track. Flows better.

Anyway, an hour of Fagen.

I've got to do a serious search for digital copies of a few of his albums.

Been listening to this tenner this evening, and it's reminded me how awesome (and dark) his lyrics were. "Maybe later, we can get together and have a relapse" from "Hospital Song" just cracked me up. And (I may be making this up but) I seem to remember that the title of the song "Ruin My Life" is how he proposed marriage to his future (and present) wife.

A national treasure.

He seemed like a dick the one time I met him, but he was opening for Bootsauce, so I wasn't surprised.

I've uploaded Crawl With Me. It's the only thing of his I have, other than the Young Canadians album.

Holy shit, thanks! I've been craving to hear this album lately, because I remember thinking it was a major disappointment when it came out - John Cale put the keyboards up front when I wanted the songs to build on the sloppy punk geetar power of Poisoned. I'm hoping I can hear it with fresh, more jaded ears this time out.

If Mike Mills sang lead for the "Wendell Gee" and "Oddfellows Local 151" and "Lightnin' Hopkins" aspect of R.E.M. you get something similar to Murray Attaway & Company, with a little bit of Drivin' N Cryin', Smithereens and several alcoholic, deviant uncles & pastors mixed in.
Excellent band with a small discography.

Excellent Phil. I used to LURV these guys. First song I heard from these guys when I was 11 (via my older bro) was "Whiskey Talk", and I was hooked.

Could have just uploaded ten tracks from Raintown since it's still my favorite, but this is a good overview of Glasgow's interesting blend of Springsteen and The Blue Nile. Or maybe Aztec Mellencamp. Simon & Braggfunkel?

RIYL: The Blue Nile, Prefab Sprout, Aztec Camera, Luka Bloom, Poi Dog Pondering, The Dream Academy, The Lilac Time, Danny Wilson, The Beautiful South, Triffids -- that whole crop of altpoppers from the late 80's.

I thought about doing a Deacon Blue but wasn't sure there'd really be any interest. Hell, I even thought of doing a Ricky Ross solo tenner. I heartily endorse this mix even if you are missing my favorite DB song (When Will You Make My Phone Ring?).

Yeah, it was pretty hard to decide on the the Raintown tracks. And somehow only one from When The World Knows Your Name stayed on as I tried to cover their career.

Later stuff doesn't have as much emotional resonance for me but it seems useful for anyone just hearing them now.

It's good for me too. I've spent the past six or seven years mostly listening to new music, and often individual, just released tracks instead of full albums. Good to focus on the older stuff even if some of the production can be a little dated and heart-on-sleeve at times.

The House of Love

[img][307:240]http://www.pennyblackmusic.co.uk/PictureGallery/6198.jpg[/img]

One of those 80s bands that didn't quite sound 80s. Deserved more recognition - and it's almost surprising by how well this stuff has aged. Tenner includes stuff from their long lost Creation debut, the "Loneliness Is a Gun" single, plus their better-known Fontana years, and the last two songs are from their '06 reunion.

1. Christine
2. Hope
3. Sulphur
4. Loneliness Is A Gun
5. Shake & Crawl

The Minutemen

'Cause somebody had to do one for one of my afvorite bands ever. Besides, the songs are short and the download is quick. If for some reason you're not familiar with these guys, check it out. I tried to grab things off most of their releases. So, if all you've done is listen to Double Nickels, you may find either the earlier more frantic stuff or the later more structured stuff a new take. Enjoy...

The Punch Line (The Punch Line)
Paranoid Chant (Paranoid Time)
Bob Dylan Wrote Propaganda Songs (What Makes A Man Start Fires?)
Fake Contest (What Makes A Man Start Fires?)
Little Man With A Gun In His Hand (Buzz and Howl Under the Influence of Heat)
History Lesson Part II (Double Nickels on the Dime)
Jesus & Tequila (Double Nickels on the Dime)
The Big Stick (3 Way Tie for Last)
Courage (3 Way Tie for Last)
King Of The Hill (Project Mersh)

Of course, this tenner is only about 15 minutes long, right?

Good choices on The Minutemen although I probably would have only used 1 track at most from 3 Way Tie.

Bruce Cockburn

Image

I didn't realize that Bruce Cockburn's '70s and '80s stuff hadn't quite made the trek to digital. It's too bad. For anyone unfamiliar, he started out in the very early '70s as a fairly precious Christian songwriter who could pluck a mean acoustic guitar. Fortunately, as he traveled the world, that naive belief system turned into a questing religiosity, which made his music a LOT more listenable. For a brief moment,, probably between around 1975 - 1984, he seemed like a major talent - although his achilles heel has always been a tendency towards strident lyrics that border on political doggerel (as evidence, check out the words he tries to cram in the rhyme scheme of "Call It Democracy"). This tenner is mostly uploaded from my vinyl collection, and would've loved to include the song "Coldest Night of the Year" but couldn't find it.

1. The Blues Got The World...
2. Wondering Where The Lions Are
3. Tokyo
4. Rumours of Glory
5. Peggy's Kitchen Wall
6. Lovers in a Dangerous Time
7. If I Had A Rocket Launcher
8. Civilization and Its Discontents
9. Call It Democracy
10. Mama Just Wants to Barrelhouse All Night Long
