I don't think that's a new book. I've read it though, and it's pretty great. Possibly the best band-related book I've read (although I haven't read too many).

I've never considered myself to be much of a great songwriter. I mean, I've written maybe five tunes in my life, or maybe it's between five and ten that I think are pretty good, and of those, I think maybe five are worth doing. There are a couple of Big Star songs - one called "In The Street", one called "When My Baby's Beside Me", one called "September Gurls" that's fair. The best song I've ever written is from one of my solo recordings... called "I've Got A Thing For You."

It doesn't surprise me that there's such a big following [for Big Star], but I sorta think the band is overrated. It's the sort of thing that appeals to young guys who are picking up guitars and don't really know much about playing them.

For me, the best group of the last few years has been Teenage Fanclub. I'm sort of a big fan of theirs. The Replacements were a great group, but I tell you, not much of new music appeals to me very much."

I agree with Alex Chilton's assessment of his own material.

It's no different now - people trying to outdo ! each other in extremes. There are people who like X, and there are people who say X are wimps; they like Black Flag.

Interesting and not surprising that one of the most self-loathing figures in the history of rock would feel this way.

But I do think that he's selling himself short.

Radio City and Third/SL are two of my ten favorite albums of all time, and to be completely honest, the three songs he mentions (that whole thing is a quote from the book, by the way) are three of my least favorite Big Star songs.
