I was just reading the topic about DDR going to Nashville, and asking for some things to do while there, and the record store thing came up. So, I thought, how many times have I been in a record shop recently?

I honestly can't remember the last time I have been a store that only sold music. Either used or otherwise.

With direct sales from bands online, amazon, insound, and other online avenues, I really have no need to go a record store. I don't know if this is because I am getting older, (39) or just don't have the time, or just don't care.

So for me, i would say, 90% online, 10% Best Buy for new releases, 0% in a music only store.

You ?

well i've yet to jump into the world of paypal and likewise for itune/emusic etc. so i do very little shopping online. i would say my split goes like this:

33% In store
33% snail mail order direct from labels
20% shows
13% record fairs/garage sales
01% online

The one decent record store close to me has cut down its back catalog so drastically its only worthwhile to pop in on release days. Sad to say this has pushed my store buying way down.

How weird is this though--a friend msg'd me the other day to say that some of her former co-workers at said store are OPENING a record store. Have yet to check it out, but what an uphill battle.

Because of Emusic, I'm at nearly 100% online these days. I do end up buying a few physical releases here and there though, so I'd say realistically I'm 90-95% online.

I haven't bought something in a music store in over a year.
:(

I've only bought a handful of discs though.

Roughly like this:

50% online - Amazon, BMG/yourmusic, emusic, half.com, etc.
30% chain stores - mostly Borders w/ coupons, occasionally Best Buy or Fry's
20% record stores - There are 4 good ones left here, two really close to where I live. I just don't make it over to them very often, and these days I buy more older stuff than newer releases. For older stuff, I'm generally just trying to find the best deal, and the indie stores usually aren't the cheapest. Ultimately I just have to maintain my own budget even though I love going to record stores, and I want to support them as much as possible. It'll be a really sad day when I no longer have that option. I still miss having a big store like Tower to go to.

If I actually want to buy something I'll go to an actual store.

I dload a lot of stuff to check it out but I rarely buy an album I want in a digital only format. I've got probably $75 in Itunes gift certs just sitting in my computer desk from last Christmas. I usually only use them for random singles for mixes.

I hate buying only digital and avoid it usually.

EDIT: I see it wasn't a digital vs hard copy question. So, if I really want something I'll usually check all the local shops first, then the big boxes, and if I don't find it there I'll order online from wherever I can find it the cheapest.

I go to Grimey's because I know a lot of the staff and they are super friendly and they recommend stuff that I may not have heard. That's a luxury.

If I want a hard copy and it's not at Grimey's, I'll buy online. Same goes if I have a gift certificatr to an on-line retailer.

To answer the exact question, the ratio is 90/10 record store.

I basically only buy music online as digital downloads. When I moved in September, I bit the bullet and threw out all of my jewel cases, acknowledging that they are essentially valueless, and that I had kept them in boxes for 3 years and had no interest in displaying them. I don't want any more of them and try as I might, I'm just not an audiophile. 256kbps is plenty for me. I try to find the album on emusic, then to buy downloads from the band or label, and if those don't work I download from Amazon.

Unfortunately for me, even with a population of 1.3 mil (metro), there isn't a single B&M store here worth walking into. I'm forced to buy on-line because of that.

I only buy vinyl and I mostly buy in spurts, often when I'm in the States, because selection and price are way better. Sometimes I'll order from the label, and less and less often am I buying at shows, because I don't go too often anymore, and bands suck.

I've never bought an mp3 for myself.

Probably about 40% stores / 60% online for me.

I pretty much buy all my back catalogue and 2nd CD's from Amazon market place now. I occassionally buy US import CD's for some new releases as they can be considerably cheaper than the UK equivalent even taking postage into account but the two week shipping wait is a bit of a killer. Also the store doesn't always have what you want and sometimes you can only get alums on the internet.

Generally though I buy my new releases from the store.

I had gotten into the habit of doing the vast majority of my buying online, but then I started making myself only buy in actual stores as a way of limiting my purchases. Really, it was a good way to make me remember how much I enjoy record shopping and such and how they may not have what you're looking for, but you may just stumble across something you wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

Nowadays, I do buy online when it's just something I feel like I must have and I can't get it locally. But, generally I stick to stopping by a record store and browsing around.

I'm probably 95% b&m (60% music only, 35% best buy), 5% online. No itunes or emusic for me.

Probably something like 50% from an online only store (eg Amazon, Half.com, emusic); 35% purchased online from a brick & mortar store (eg Dusty Groove), 15% purchased at Amoeba.

I haven't bought a physical CD for 2 or 3 years now. When I do buy stuff, its usually through emusic, and occasionally Itunes.

70% in record store, 20% online ordering, 10% at shows

typically i don't buy digital downloads
i'd rather try a download and decide if i should buy it on vinyl
sometimes when there's no vinyl option i'll purchase with itunes

i do really miss the days of browsing the locals, but i rarely have the time anymore.

Do you do most of your music listening at home then? I'd love to be a vinyl collector but I rarely listen to music outside of the car or work. I have a few, mostly old vinyl records but don't even have my record player hooked up at the moment.
