This is what I was kind of saying earlier in this thread. I was at the Denver Velo Swap last fall and one of our sales reps bought a Kona Smoke single speed for $100 there and it kicks so much ass. Completely simple and fun. He uses it to just kick around town and dirt jumping. He also takes it camping with him.

you need the ultimate single speed - a unicycle.

Could one of you bikesperts recommend a relatively inexpensive cruiser-type model for an enormous fat ass, such as myself? It needs to be able to carry over three bills without disintegrating under my Orca-like frame.

Seriously Bob, you don't have to look for anything special dude.

Frames and components won't be affected by weight. I woulld look for bigger tires though and run at a higher psi in them. A common cross country tire is around 26 x 2.0 or 2.1. For a bigger person I might go with a 26 x 2.35 or 2.5.

I have talked to guys who used to play football and are into biking and that's what I usually recommend.

My friend has 2 of these - one motorized, one not. He never uses his car anymore - just trikes about town on one of these, and loves it...

I started off just pasting the pic into the message, and then I caught myself daydreaming about owning one... those things are hypnotic!

They're quite the center of attention...and an easy ride, at that...

Plus, the back basket allows for a lot of weight/things to be put back there - the trikecycle allows for more junk in the trunk than other bikes...

The Green Machine was way better than the Big Wheel.

Mountain Bike Action is also a good magazine to check out when looking for a bike. Lots of reviews and prices. I'll second mtbr.com as well.

i'm sorry, but mbaction is the shit of the scum dont go near that magazine its total bs. go sign onto mtbr.com and ask in the What bike To Buy forum and you will be met by eager people like myself who want to tell you who to give your money to.
BTW, i wish i lived in CA, the riding in ontario sucks

The neighbor kid had one and I didn't. It was probably more about coveting than about actual awesomness.

That's true - the neighbor kid had one as well, but I actually got to use it a couple of times and, not only did it move the slowest, the steering was hell...

OH Yeah! SSs are the most bestest bikes ever. you can get obscenely light things that are freakishly durable, easy to maintain, better excercise, more fun and make you so much of a better rider.... my baby is a 19 lb fully rigid (no suspension)Soul Cycles (excellent company to check out if you have the money for a custom build) singlespeed i can smoothly run 7< ft drops with. i bike about 300 days a year and maintenance, which can all be done at home in the basement, no high-tech crap, has cost me about $20 in replacement parts for a whole year. And with the amazing leg workout, you can get the strength to school gearies on the ups and even more so on the downs. :P

The spinouts were much better on the Green Machine than on the Big Wheel. You'd just push the levers apart from each other really fast and there you go.

I'm still on the full-suspension kick. Here's one for ya: http://www.supergo.com/profile.cfm?LPRO ... referpage= ...that's a hell of a buy for an '05. And another http://www.supergo.com/profile.cfm?LPRO ... referpage= $789 and it has Hayes discs! (Albeit mechanical disc brakes).

BTW, I also have a singlespeed- an OnOne. But I have more fun on the FS. Usually.

I posed my question at www.MTBR.com ...here's the thread: http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=84088[/img]

which soul do you own? i bought mine late last fall so it isn't one of the newer models, i think they now have one with an EBB. i haven't seen another one in ontario though. i didn't think it was all that pricey even for a custom build. i think i paid under $500 CAD for the frame, fork, crank & bb (fsa x-drives), pig headset and surly single speed hub. chad even threw in a free 33 tooth ring and spider.

mine is an '04 hardline 19" in gloss grey.... i paid a grand total of 740 CDN for the entire bike, which i bought (very lightly) used on ebay from a guy in north london.
i'm running the stock frame, seatpost, tensioners and fork, cane creek headset and levers, really wide Specialized bars, Mavic/DT/CODA wheels, White industries crankset, Blackspire 34T ring, Sram chain, shimano bb and 15T cog (with spacers on 9-speed hub), Panaracer Fire XC tires, SDG Bel-air, freeride flats, some random stem and some grease. :D i can't wait until april!!! (going to build some trail in missisauga [http://groups.msn.com/PEDALOCTANE/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=9] and ride the Paris-Ancaster)

So awesome. I got sick on one once. But wasn't there like a Big Brown Machine before The Green Machine? I seem to remember a friend having a brown one when I was about 8 years old, maybe 9.

I really don't want to know what you and your friend were doing.
