the wrestler was really good but only slightly less depressing than requiem for a dream.

We saw Milk last night. I've enjoyed Gus Van Zant's minimalist films of the last decade, especially Gerry and Elephant (although the Kurt Cobain one and Paranoid Park were pretty flawed). Lord knows the story of Milk was powerful and timely... but this was a really mediocre movie. Formulaic, expected. Script was cartoonish, and direction was stultifingly conventional. Penn was pretty good, but Josh Brolin stole the film. Wait for the DVD.

which is well worth your time. I'm a GVS fan, so I'm eagerly waiting to sit down with MILK. Just watched Paranoid Park this evening, and really enjoyed it.

Confession: I've never seen the stage play. If you read reviews, talk shows, etc apparently I'm the only one who hasn't seen the play. I feel like this is automatically setting it up for a fall. Like its being judged on this whole other level of greatness, instead of the celluloid level.

It was an adequate film. It wasn't revelatory, it wasn't awe-inspiringly beautiful (Deakins was the cinematographer, btw), and if actors phone in performances, perhaps this wasn't but it wasn't inspired. We've seen these characters before, and I refuse to believe that people are casting Amy Adams for roles still. She plays mousey extremely well, and thats about it. In Doubt, whenever the acting reached a certain level her very noticeable blank look ruined whatever pinnacle her co-star was aspiring to reach. PSH was great, though once again his level of expertise here probably hurt him, since we're used to him displaying a great range. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Streep pretty much has an Oscar nomination. Its not that hard. Its Meryl freakin' Streep. Once again, simply an adequate outing.

I saw Benjamin Button today and really liked it. It didn't blow me away, I thought they could have tied Katrina in a lot more, kind of silly the way they simply mentioned it.

I plan on seeing Doubt and Valkyrie both by the end of my vacation.

You of all people would benefit from watching this movie. Overall it's about where ideals end and real life moves in. :)

I think I go see Valkyrie or Doubt today.

I actually saw this last evening on another's urging. Without knowing anything about it, I cheebed up thinking it had something to do with Rasta. No, I'm not that dumb... But it was very predictable even without reading the book -- although I knew what I was getting myself into. I was amused numerous times since, growing up, I actually had a Labrador that acted worse than the one in the movie. Otherwise, unless you have some dying reason to see a sad movie, definitely something to put off until rental.

Finally saw Kung Fu Panda last night. Aside from geeking out on how great everything in it looked (best character design and overall look of any Dreamworks picture to date), I just really enjoyed it. It's formulaic, but not entirely predictable. Good voice talent, but I feel like Dreamworks tends to go overboard with big names - Dustin Hoffman was great, but how were Angelina Jolie or Lucy Liu necessary? None of "The Five" had very many lines in the movie, and yet they were all pretty big names. Well, if you've got money to burn... but David Cross (OK, more of a medium name) was totally wasted here.

Great mexican film called DramaMex... one of the better movies ive seen all year... also saw Milk, very well done.... and I saw Gran Torino which was pretty bad, to make Clint Eastwood look like Walter Matthau from Grumpy Old Men was a shame... i dont care if hes 80, he should always be the gun happy westerner and not the anti social old man who sits on his front porch telling kids to get off his lawn (not a stereotype, thats his actual character)

I really need to see this. I thought Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance was much better than Oldboy.

Unfortunately, I've heard that I Love You But I'm a Cyborg or whatever the hell it's called, isn't very good.

I'm getting behind on my Korean movies, though.

I thought Lady Vengeance was horrible. I was so ready to love it based on the same feelings as you had for Sympathy and Oldboy. What a letdown.

caught up on a few '08 movies:
- milk (loved it, thought everyone was excellent)
- changeling (holy fuck, this movie is depressing but was good - thought jolie was actually good for once)
- slumdog millionaire (hands down, probably my favorite movie of '08)

also just watched darjeeling limited (not bad at all) and quarantine (blech) yesterday.

The Spirit

caught this in theaters this evening. A pleasant sort of view without being jaw-droppingly amazing like Sin City is. The style is a nice touch... and the characters and plot manages to be just strong enough to keep it a nice touch as opposed to a flotation rescue device. Still probably a movie that will only attract the Sin City/Frank Miller crowd. Won't be a hit, but entertaining.

Last movie I actually watched was Stepbrothers. I thought it was damn funny, but it didn't have much of an actual story or cohesive plot line.
I caught a bit of the Foot Fist Way as my brother was watching it and fell asleep watching Scrooged on Saturday Night.

[quote="schadenfreude"]I saw "Stuck" over the past few days...

It's always a bad sign for a movie to see an adult soiled diaper to start out a movie. I guess it was to show that hospice nurse turned conflicted is a good person, but c'mon. With a few edits and a couple of re-writes of scenes, this could have been really good. Worth renting.
...........

Stuck is a tabloid-tinged thriller inspired by true events. Brandi is a compassionate young retirement-home caregiver in-line for a promotion. Tom is a victim of the downsized economy, out of work and newly homeless. Their worlds collide when Brandi, driving home from a club after too many drinks and pills, accidentally hits Tom, the impact smashing his body head-first through her car’s windshield. If discovered, this “accidentâ€
