Despite being the least "revered" of the three, I'll go as far as to say that the Samichlaus is the best beer I've ever tasted. The Bells Expedition was good, but a bit overhyped as far as I'm concerned. I actually liked the Ten Fidy (and even Old Rasputin) a bit better than the Bells.

I like all three of these... but Ten Fidy is just exceptional. I have an Expedition from 2007 in my fridge. I'll crack it open in February to see how it aged.

I tried the Samichlaus on tap last Christmas and it took me 2.5 hours to finish. So much caramel.

They do IPA/DIPAs so well out there. For us Midwesterners, only FFFs Dreadnaught and Bell's Two-Hearted measure up.

damn how did i miss this? this is a great beer. not sure if you can get it outside of san diego county. another good hoppy beer is Blind Pig IPA, made by Russian River, brewers of Pliny the Elder and even hoppier not always produced Pliny the Younger

Another one I've been lucky to try... sadly, only about 4 oz.

Yum. I would have ordered some this year, but it released right around xmas and sold out in a day.

I've been digging the german beer lately.

Frazinkaner Dunkelweisen & Spaten Dunkel to be specific.

I did grab a six pack of Bells Porter the other day. I like Porters OK, but for some reason they seem to be kinda sparse around here. Went to a pretty big liquor store and only found 2-3 porters and the Bells was the only one not a smoked Porter, which I like OK from time to time but that smokey taste in beer gets to be too much pretty quick for me.

Just had this one for the first time:
[img][161:500]http://ridgeviewliquor.com/trappistes%20rochefort.jpg[/img]

It's awfully good!
I still like the St. Bernardus Abt. 12 just a little better, but this one is right up there.

So I only have one of my amazing wisconsin stouts left in the fridge from November (Central Waters, Winter Solstice Stout), and this fucking weather has me in a stouty mood. So I went out and got a sixer of Brooklyn's Black Chocolate Stout or whatever it's called, and I like. I like a lot. It's not better than Central Waters, but it hit the spot. And with 10% alcyhol, I'd crack one open when I got home and nurse it for an hour and a half and be just right.

I need more of the dark stuff.

I've always wanted to try that Central Waters Stout. You should look for the Founders stouts (Breakfast and Imperial are out now but can be hard to find).

The Brooklyn beer I posted above is called Black OPS. It's a 4-month, bourbon barrel-aged RIS. Only 10 cases for all of Chicago. I'm going to crack it open during the Super Bowl.

And, Todd that Rochefort 10 is amazing stuff -- and it's so much easier to find nowadays.

I don't wanna over-hype it, but ... I don't know how to finish this sentence. It's about as good as imperials get, for me anyway. Rich, balanced between sweet and burnt, very complex (lots goin' on in the background), and a great kick.

I'll look, but the selection around here is embarassingly pisspoor.

I paid about $6 for my 11.5-oz. bottle.
That's fine, though because I only drink a bottle a month or so.

Is that worth the price? I want it but it's like $17 for a four pack which I have a hard time justifying.

In Quebec, La Fin Du Monde, Maudite, and Trois Pistoles are all sold at every convenience store and grocery store and they're under 4 American bucks each for a 750 ml. Needless to say, I drank a lot while I was there. Maudite is my favorite but I think most people prefer La Fin Du Monde.

I have a hang-up about not drinking beers that the label looks like I made it on my computer. Apparently, Obner does not share this hang-up.

you shouldn't judge a beer by its cover. or by its name for that matter--a lot of good beers have stupid ass names
