I finally saw Tropic Thunder last night on DVD. Funny stuff. Loved the fake trailers at the beginning, Downey was awesome throughout, and I even got a kick out of the Cruise bit. he was actually in more scenes than I had been led to believe, and his fat suit wasn't as fat as I was expecting.

The pyro special effects guy was also hilarious.

I read the book three or so years ago and really enjoyed it. The movie's existence kind of blindsided me... I only found out about it a week or two ago. So my friend took me out for a birthday treat and this was the only thing of interest playing in the theater (at the time we could see something). The movie was surprisingly close to the book. I was pretty impressed. Some interesting visual decisions to shake things up... and a loving look at reading. Probably not an Obner-esque movie, but I sure enjoyed it. (I will say that I hate Brendan Fraiser and the man should not be acting.)

I know I'm not nearly the first, but I thought Slumdog Millionaire and Gran Torino were both very well done and would recommend both to anyone. Although one of the people I saw Slumdog with didn't like the movie at all...but they're also the type of person that feels obligated to say "Ohmygawd!" in every sentence...

I definitely was in the mindset to watch this. And even with my forced amusement, I fell asleep three-quarters through.

I can tell without watching 1 frame that this is one of the worst, least funny movies ever made.

Stiller + Epic Life Fail Apatow = Gar's Head Explodes.

i wouldn't want to deny you the pleasure of advertising your hatred for this movie that you've never seen at every mention, but what exactly do you think Apatow had to do with this?

what'd you think about the main guy? i enjoyed the movie but it seemed like his narcissism burned through a lot of relationships. at first i thought that the fault lay with them, but now i think he was just a shitty performer person.

While this was the first I've seen or heard anything about this guy, I realized a while back that most of my heroes are giant, narcissistic assholes. I think it just tends to go with the territory of people who enjoy living on the fringes.

I admire what those people can create and accomplish, but there's a whole boatload of despicable behavior that tends to go with it.

Saw Frost/Nixon last night and enjoyed it immensely. The first hour was a little slow, but once it got down to business it was a righteous show indeed.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist - I don't really know what I was expecting from this. Other than a half-decent soundtrack, it was nothing special. At times I actually felt silly watching it. I dunno, maybe I'm too old to be watching this kind of thing. The finger banging scene was especially awkward and embarrassing, and not in a funny way.

Scanners is cool, but I wouldn't call it "Cronenberg at his prime". I'd say his best work is Videodrome, Naked Lunch, and eXistenZ which makes it kinda hard to label one period as his "prime".

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of fans of his earlier stuff don't like that, what with the seemingly low production values and some general cheesiness. But I just really enjoy it for some reason, perhaps that it's sort just another permutation of Videodrome and Naked Lunch and really the closest thing that he's done to those two films since.
