I had that midlake album on my computer for over a year before I listened to it for a second time and realized how incredible it was.

What a great record, front to back.

I didn't know that Al Kooper released an album in '08 until recently. Still haven't heard it yet but I'm guessing its pretty good.

I hadn't liked the last couple of Murder By Death albums as much as the Little Joe Gould (MBD's old name) album a few years ago, but Red of Tooth and Claw was very good. "Fuego!" is my jam.

I discovered secret chiefs 3 some weeks ago. I think, if I knew their album from last year earlier, like last year, it ranked in my top 5.

I think I've probably heard a good chunk of my favorite 2008 albums in 2009. Sometimes easier to separate the wheat from the chaff with a little time instead of getting obsessed with having to be the first person to hear something. Hell, I'll probably end up hearing my favorite album of 2008 sometime around 2012.

Well, shit, the last I remember checking on this last year, it had been delayed until Spring '09, so I wasn't looking for it. Time to make an order.

this is basically how i've been for the past five years or so. that's why i didn't do a year end list. i really like that beach house album from last year and just listened to it a month or so ago. all that said, this year i've been streaming a lot of new releases and downloading some but i have a feeling i will become too lazy for even this after a few more months.

Is it better than In Bocca Al Lupo? I saw them live and liked them quite a bit but that album didn't do much for me. It just felt like the guy was trying to be Johnny Cash.

I'll second the Midlake discovery. That just happened to me as well - great album.

Also, related to yesterday's NP list, The Thrills "Teenager" is one I was very late in picking up but I've been listening to it a lot lately and love it.

The Drones - Havilah

Maybe I didn't entirely sleep on it, given that it was released in the US in Feb and in Australia last fall.... but this is just the freshest, most satisfying album I've heard in a while. The sound of the guitar is fat and slinky, the garage band ethic makes it seem recorded live, the guy's voice is like Ian Drury covering Neil Young... rave, rave, rave.... It would have been my #1 had I heard it last year.

Was I the bulls eye or the launch pad I could never find the switch

Yes, that Drones album is pretty excellent.

Yeah that Drones record was my number 1 from last year. I can't say enough good things about this band, they're the only "young" band that I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone.

I've seen them every year for the past 5 years and they just keep getting better, and they work their asses off. They just don't quit touring, here, or in Europe, or the U.S. The thing I like most about them is I can still hear room for improvement, and I know they'll only get better. They lyrics are a perfect combination of spat venom and Aussie wit: "Wanna shrink your stinky footprint? Get your tubes tied..."

I saw them twice last year and they blew my fucking mind both times, in a tiny bar and then at a huge festival. That guitar sound is what I live for.

And it's refreshing to hear a band that is tight and talented enough to record live with few overdubs.

I remember someone posted the record on here when it came out, and some fucking idiot said it sounded like Modest Mouse. I don't really know Modest Mouse, but that has to be the single most inanely stupid comparison I've ever heard about anything, ever. Baffling.

It's like saying the Drive By Truckers sound like the fucking Shins or something.

I was genuinely surprised that this record wasn't a big hit on this board.
