how come phoenix got so big since their last album?

I was big into Its Never Been Like That when it came out (still one of my faves of the decade), but I don't remember nearly as many people liking it at the time (Yail Bloor, a couple of others?)

Maybe they're one of those groups that just slowly amasses fans without much hyperbole?

I've been playing It's Never Been Like That a whole lot lately.

I was really surprised to see so many people turn out to see them at V Fest a couple of years ago. More surprised by the type of people singing along than anything.

Still, I don't know about this record one spin through (not crazy about the synths), but I'll give it time. I just think there's enough electro-tinged indie pop out there already. It's 2009 and I live in Australia, the goddamn fluoro capital of the world. I've been choking on it for nearly ten years now.

Yeah, one listen in and this seems like a step back from INBLT (which you are correct in saying splates, I was this board's biggest booster of outside of you) to their earlier, more synth-y and decidedly not as good records. There's enough to make me go back though.

i'm going to disagree and say that this album is superior to INBLT. i've given this several plays, and enjoy every track, which is rare for me. thankfully this sounds more like "United" than their later material. they've brought back the funky pop.

1901, Fences, Countdown (Sick For The Big Sun) are all equally incredible.

If you dont move to Fences, you dont have a soul, this is a great album... i think i like it equally to INBLT, different moods, different albums.... as a whole tho, i dont see how you can not like this one

i may have to give this a listen. i'd say united has my favorite songs of theirs. i was not too into the one from a few years ago, though.

What's the background on these guys? I went to AllMusic, but there's too many bands named Phoenix.

french band with ties to air and daft punk. i think they were actually air's backing band for a while. one of the guys was in a band with the dudes from daft punk back in the day too. "if i ever feel better" was the fucking jam about 2000/2001. "too young" was in lost in translation. they've had, what, 4 albums now. pretty good electronic, funk, pop stuff.

I thought it reminded me more of United too, and that's fine with me.

I'm really surprised at how many of you have already judged this album saying "meh, not as good as the last one " or "this thing rocks, best thing they've ever done!!:rawk: :rawk: :rawk: ".

it's barely been 24 hours since the thing leaked. give it some time you wankers

but what's the point of these threads blowing up within a day of a leak if not to make slapdash posts?
