punisher war zone - loved it. as a piece of art/film/movie it was not good at all. there were a lot of peripheral characters from the comics involved but had little to no explanation of the who/what/why. it was if you were only reading issue 3 of a 5 issue story arc. that being said, i thought it was a great translation of a punisher comic. very very violent, they got the origin right (or at least better than the first one), and it was just no nonsense brutal action.

the day the earth stood still - began watching this late last night. fell asleep. will report back later.

it's awesome that people like PWZ.

i wouldn't bother finishing the day the earth stood still though.

Loog, you should check out Role Models. Only link to Apatow is Rudd and it's directed by the guy from The State who did Red Hot American Summer. You might like I Love You Man too.

My son saw this today and said, "It wasn't even scary. Total let-down."

If a 14 year old doesn't like it, I'd avoid.

I, too, highly enjoyed Punisher: War Zone when I saw it in the theatre. I was the only one laughing/cheering through the whole thing, though...

No one, up to this point, had realized what an empty shell of action The Punisher is (and I mean that in the best way possible)

I liked Transporter 3, even if mostly for when the female lead says to The Transporter, "So, you... You are the gay?", especially after the first 2 movies. I thought that Transporter 3 held a nice ground betweeen 2 (which was superbly over the top) and the original Transporter (which was a new kind of awesome). I mean, it didn't have a throwing-grease-so-I-can-slide-through-it scene, nor a let-me-flip-my-car-and-knock=off-a-detonating-explosive-with-a-hanging-crane scene either.

Two things seen tonight are:

Dana Gould - the new comedy special - was really funny but, unfortunately, I'd seen him do most of these new(er) bits live before the DVD came out on Tuesday. Dana Gould seems like he's just rounding into form after 12-or-so years away from doing stand-up but, if you remember that he used to be the "brightest star" in the alt-comedy scene in the mid-90's, you can see glimpses of the brilliance that had him headlining over Patton Oswalt, Margret Cho, Kathy Griffin, David Cross, and the like...

Now, I'm boarding/drinking and rewatching one of my favorite movies ever (Daro Argento's Opera), which comes highly recommended by yours truly.

For myself, it's the law of diminishing returns - it seems like, the further the Ferrell/McKay and Apatow/Rogan camp progress into making movies, there's a law of diminishing returns as they seek to strike a balance between "filmmaking" and "comedic writing".

I mean, I'm a sucker, and will see all of their stuff in the theaters, but they seem to have come blazing out the gates with funny jokes at the expense of a defined through-line (see: most Mike Myers movies, Anchorman even though they essentially made that movie twice, at al.), and now seem to be sacrificing the really funny stuff for the sense of character arcs/progression/etc. . Apatow and McKay/Ferrell seem to be sacrificing humor for story which, although I don't mind it, seems to be what both groups seem to be going for.

I know that might seem like an over-generalization, but there's no way that McKay would have a scene with 4 people singing "Afternoon Delight" for no apparent reason in a newer film, nor would Apatow allow a "you know how I know you're gay?" scene into "Funny People".

As they learn how to "make movies", they're not-so-slowly learning how to "Make movies" - a.k.a. stuff that test audiences enjoy more, and the funny moments in their "films" are fewer and farther-between because of it.

Agreed. In a far less intellectual view than what Loog is looking for.

Changeling - This was pretty good. Much better than I expected. In fact, I put it on as background noise as I studied, but it was so engrossing that I stopped studying. With this source material, the filmmakers could only screw it up, which they managed not to do.

bummer. I went to a talk by the ghost hunter/paranormal expert that worked this case in real life. Scary stuff. Too bad they couldn't capture how frightening he made it sound.

There's a doc on Discovery that ran a bunch of years ago about it. I'd imagine with the movie out, it'd probably be in rotation again.

Definitely worth a viewing. Based on the 1-man show Bogosian did in MA/NYC, with Oliver Stone directing. Low-budget, and well-shot. Precursor to his more mainstream Natural Born Killers.

The only available in-print of this film is vhs dub quality and fs. That notwithstanding, the film is adequately suppresses all fantasies of both Streep and Nicholson on screen together. Gorgeous cinematography...which too bad I couldn't enjoy it for the aforementioned dub job. Thanks Lion's Gate.

def.

the trailer makes it looks like there's twice as much sex and violence. not so much drugs - looks like more electrocutions though.

re: the day the earth stood still. sheesh. i wish i could get a job writing a movie for keanu reeves.

The dude who wrote Ironweed and the whole "Albany Trilogy" was a really good friend of HST in the early days. Interesting book, if not totally my thing. Never seen the movie

Saw this independent, low-budget film last night. Was okay, cautiously recommend if there's nothing else better to see right now. It's about these two sisters in their twenties who are trying to find themselves in life and make a living out in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The pair stumble into a business where they make a lot of money cleaning up messy, bloody crime scenes.

I didn't know anything about this going in, besides it was Peckinpah, and I wasn't expecting a comedy, but I really enjoyed this. Robards was great.

So I've netflixed 2 Looney Tunes discs now and both have played in what seems to be random order. When I stop partway through and then page through chapters, there is stuff that never played.

What up with that?

I saw Bolt last week. It was decent, actually. Typical formulaic kids' movie, but done surprisingly well for Disney Studios.

Some really great animation in it, especially the pigeons.
