WO: Like the cancer that is that Darjeeling guy… what’s his name?

AVC: Wes Anderson?

WO: Yeah. His completely cancerous approach to using music is basically, “Here’s my iPod on shuffle, and here’s my movie.â€

I'll tend to agree to a certain extent, only on the thought that certain songs are used in films to evoke a certain memory of your own, or flesh out a mood. In some aspects, its lazy to include such songs simply because perhaps your scene isn't conveying the right mood.

I will throw in though that its pretty damn cool when a film and previously written song work in harmony and complete synchronicity with each other.

Will Oldham, by the way, said in another interview that I linked to that he was called about one of his songs being used in a film, and he said it was ok for $500 so, maybe Willy-boy just doesn't like Anderson?

Am I right in thinking that Will Oldham just got cooler to Loog?

See I wholeheartedly disagree with his take on Wes Anderson - One of the things that I've always loved about Wes's movies is his use of music - many of the scenes seem to mimic the meter of the songs that are played in them - I don't know how he could accomplish this if he just hit shuffle as Oldham alleges.

I don't know if that's really any better that what Oldham alleges. Anderson movies are basically a string of music videos that he films and calls a movie. That's basically what you are describing, scenes mimicing the meter of the songs.

I'm not against the use of existing songs in movies by any means, but Anderson over does it every time, and makes "hip" choices to boot. It's too much.

but he usually uses such great songs.

the rushmore soundtrack is responsible for getting to listen to The Creation further.

i think it's pretty obvious that Wes puts a great deal of thought into his song choices.

Wes Anderson films are just a bunch of scenes, linked together by music and really bad dialogue. But the worst part is, you can tell he thinks dialogue is his strong point. Darjeeling Limited was okay in parts, but so cringe worthy in others. That Jason Schwartzman character made my gut tighten into a knot every time he opened his mouth, or every time someone said something about him.

I think that Wes is the Tarantino of the late 90s. He was VERY original, at one point..or, he coubled together a gang of influences to produce something that mass audiences THOUGHT was original (me included at the time.)

His schtick gets in the way of the story, the characters and the movies now, and I will be SHOCKED if he writes/directs/produces something watchable, much less good or critically laudible.

i've liked each of his movies less and less to the point of not even wanting to see the darjeeling limited.

his next movie is a cartoon, fantastic mr. fox. it'll probably be watchable.

Will seems to ignore the fact that a large portion of Wes's soundtrack is original score.

yeah but it's the slow-mo tableau-style shots with the british invasion music that stick with you. i totally agree with the tarantino analogy. . . glad to see he's making a change. . . he hit a dead end with the royal tennebaums and had nowhere else to go in that style--then he made two more films.
