I've mentioned on the board over the years that Bill Frisell is one of my favorite guitarists making music. He has a new record out inspired by the Disfarmer Project that was commissioned by Chuck Helm at the Wexner Center for the Arts at Ohio State Univ.

First listen at NPR with a story about the project

Last year I saw him perform this live at the Belcourt Theatre here in Nashville and for me, it was one of the best concert experiences of the last 5 years.

RIYL - Bill Frisell, atmospheric instrumental Americana, Ry Cooder?

I saw him on Austin City Limits a year or two ago and always meant to look further. Recommendations on where to start?

I started with his Nashville record and have checked out things here and there. I've only heard a couple of records he's done as a player (Vic Chesnutt's Ghetto Bells and Carrie Rodriguez's 2nd to last record).

I enjoy Ghost Town, Nashville and Blues Dream. I've heard East/West which is top notch.

Other than stray listens here and there--thanks, Pandora--my only real exposure was an episode of Sessions At West 54th that I taped way back in '98 because Sonic Youth was performing. Bill Frisell was the other performer.

I used to own his LIVE record with Joey Baron and Kermit Driscoll, but I can't remember much about it other than it was a little more Dowtown-NY-jazz-sounding than any of his latter day stuff which is much more atmospheric, melodic and often playful played through his unique guitar tone.

He has a intimidatingly long discography and puts out a new record nearly every year, but I've enjoyed most of his stuff from the last 15 years as he has a difficult to classify but instantly recognizable sound.

this has potential to be interesting:

Quote:
Bill Frisell is currently working on an album where he is playing only John Lennon songs with Greg Liesz, Jenny Scheinman, Tony Scherr and Kenny Wollesen. Produced by Lee Townsend, this record will be available through Savoy Records towards the end of 2011.

This is my favorite. I've seen him a couple times live... he's brilliant but has almost too many chops. He's a jazz version of Ry Cooder... so many styles.

Yes Harry, I dig Blues Dream as well. It and Nashville were my intros to him
