this is probably blasphemy to califone hardcore fans, but this is starting to sound to me what wilco coulda been had nels been heading the band this whole time.

The problem with that isn't that I hate to see Califone compared to Wilco or that I think they're necessarily superior to Wilco. It's just that they're very, very different beasts. Califone never comes anywhere near the kind of syrupy pop that Wilco regularly churns out.

And Nels hasn't really changed Wilco very much anyway, IMO. O'Rourke steered them closer to Califone territory than Nels has.

true on that last part. loose fur would be a better comparison. and i'm not necessarily trying to lump them together at all...just kinda thinking out loud. the noisier bits kinda remind a bit of what nels does for them, live at least. i was thinking if nels was a huge part of YHF or something, it might've veered closer to this sound.

really good shit though...i'm glad i'm at least checking it out now. better late than never.

Now check out Red Red Meat Bunny Got Paid (if you haven't already). Same kind of fucked-up take on rootsy Americana, although sounds somehow more planned out than the Califone mutation.

The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire

These guys were way more than wild costumes and cocaine. Not that any of that hurts. Rock solid funk with syrupy melodies dripping all over everything. One of those bands I need to take the time one of these days and dip further into, but they do have a pretty large and daunting catalog to dive into.

I love both bands, but yeah, I don't hear it. Wilco is pop, country, classic rock, even Brit invasion, cohesive, arranged ... Califone is folky, ambient, fragmented, partial, falling apart...

i will seek this out later today.

After all the Califone talk in that one tourney thread I got curious and checked them out further. In the AMG review this caught my eye and got me searching too:

Quote:
The album's centerpiece has to be the title cut though: a nearly 15-minute-long delicious slab of detuned avant skronk blues that strongly echoes Captain Beefheart's Mirror Man album.

I fucking love Mirror Man.
