Is that the first time you've listened to Eureka? Man, I like that album a lot, especially "Ghost Ship in a Storm".

it was my first time, and i'm not giving up...just not in the mood right now maybe. i listened to his new one yesterday and really liked it, and always liked his contributions to loose fur as well. decided it was about time to dive in further.

Yeah that's my favorite album of his. Haven't heard the new one though.

edit: never mind. I was thinking that was the cover to Insignificance which is my favorite. I have Eureka too but don't like it that much either.

bg, if you see this -- this is much better than a fickle sonance. this is a bit different than the hard bop i've been listening to. i guess this could be considered closer to free jazz?

Yeah you could say that. I don't know that you'd call it free jazz but its certainly closer to it than the average hard bop album. I think you could call it a Post Bop album, building on a Hard Bop foundation in terms of melodic/harmonic structure but incorporating more improvization and other elements of modal and free jazz. I'm not sure that's technically right but it sounds good. In any case, this is one of the first albums in which McLean started incorporating more avante garde musicians in his band. The drummer on this is Billy Higgins, who is probably best known for playing with Ornette Coleman. If you like "Let Freedom Ring," I'd suggestion "Destination Out" and "New and Old Gospel" next. The latter which features Billy Higgins again on drums and Ornette Coleman guesting on trumpet.

What do you think of "Mode for Joe"? That's another favorite of mine.

Mine for today:

i've definitely been digging alot of what billy higgins plays on. i grabbed mclean's action, because it was on the same blog as this one. but i'll check the other two out as well.

i am loving joe henderson. mode for joe and inner urge were both instant classics for me upon first listen.

Probably still my favorite 2009 album slightly over Joe Bataan and Loudon Wainwright.
