I saw Inglourious Basterds last night. It was good - at times VERY good - but all in all I think it may be just a tad overrated. It's definitely worth seeing, and some of the individual performances are phenomenal.

The palpable tension in several key scenes is probably the movie's true strength.

I am going to see that this weekend.

Thinking of going to see Paper Heart tonight....

not surprisingly, i went into the conversation with some pretty high hopes after reading that it's coppola's favorite as a director and gene hackman's favorite role for himself. but i wasn't terribly impressed. it started out fine, but my mind drifted during the party scene and i thought the hotel scene was a bit long, especially the 2001esque torment. but i'm glad i've seen it now.

I loved IB and the 5 chapter structure made it not feel overly long for me. Agreed on the tension in certain scenes - almost all with Hans Landa in it. That actor did an amazing job.

Especially the opening scene at the French dairy farmhouse.

But one of the non-Landa scenes was perhaps the most tension-filled at all: the basement bar scene.

Yea, definitely.

Also, found this morning: a list of movie references from Inglourious Basterds. Pretty long.

I really enjoyed "Inglourious Basterds"...

I took my three oldest kids to see "Ponyo" on Saturday, hoping they would enjoy it. They all LOVED it. They never lost interest, and were even paying attention during the credits. My 3-year old son was trying to explain the plot to my wife later that night as he got ready for bed (he got the basic idea pretty well). My 6-year old daughter wanted to go see it again on Sunday. They were all trying to sing the song that rolled during the credits yesterday as well. All three of them want me to buy it when it comes out on DVD. And they all were excited when I told them that I would rent "Spirited Away" for them (after explaining the basic plot and that it was done by the same animation director). Maybe I should just go ahead and buy that one as well (I almost bought it for myself a few years ago).

going to see Thirst tonight.

Final Destination 3D was pretty good as far as cheesy horror movies go.

th only part of Inglourious Basterds i thought dragged a little was the 3rd chapter.

extract. this movie was a bit disjointed. it felt like mike judge simply pulled together a few characters and scenes that wouldn't work in other movies and combined them here. there were a few funny moments, but overall it was really mediocre.

Watchmen - Haven't read the books so I had no point of reference going in. I have a feeling I'd enjoy the books a lot more than the movie. Some interesting story lines and characters...it just seemed to cram too much into one movie.

Extract

It had some pretty good laughs. I like the way Mike Judge develops certain characters (like the annoying neighbor in this one). But, the scene that I could not stop laughing in was when Joel gets high. I thought it was pretty damn funny. I'd say it's worth the price of admission, or maybe a matinee. To me it's not a movie like Office Space that you can just keep going back to over and over, but it is well worth a viewing IMO.

Saw I Love You Man and The Wrestler over the past couple of days.

Neither were great, but I enjoyed both. Didn't have high expectations, and my expectations were met. Both worth the time they took to watch and the $1 each for the rental.

bonnie & clyde. this was pretty good. warren beatty was way too old to play clyde, though. he had to have been in his mid to late 30s for this and clyde only lived to 25, i think. but that's really my biggest complaint.

I saw Basterds twice. Once by myself, the second with some friends. I loved it even more the second time around.

Other things i've watched over the last several weeks:

-District 9
-The Perfect Storm (due to watching so much of The Deadliest Catch the last few weeks)
-Quarantine - Eh, this just didn't do it for me. I also wasn't in the mood for the first person camera gimmick.

I'm about to get my cheese on and watch Executive Decision via Netflix Instant Browser. I also watched 4 eps of Man vs Food. Cool show.

I can't wait for The Road.
